First, Jim Meehan's day after blog (http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sportslink/2009/nov/15/day-after-mvsu/).
—Steven Gray had a packed stat line: 16 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal. He took the ball to the hole aggressively a couple times and was usually rewarded.

“I thought he was kind of sleep-walking for a while and all of a sudden it was kind of a Steven outing,” head coach Mark Few said. “He can do a lot of things; we’re counting on him to do a lot of things. He’s gotta fill that stat sheet, all the way across the board. That’s kind of what he is – a complete guard.”

It was an enjoyable week for Gray, who finished a three-night run on the stage at Magnuson Theatre on Friday. He’ll be back on stage sometime, but not during basketball season.

“For now, it’s basketball,” he said, “because we have so much stuff coming up. Once the season is done, I’d like to do something again because it was a blast.”
—Few said the decision to redshirt Sam Dower and David Stockton was “more a reflection of maximizing their careers here. They certainly could both play right now. I’d be more than comfortable playing both and they’d help us.”

Few reiterated that both are on essentially on-call if necessary.
—Bol Kong didn’t suit up because he hasn’t cracked the top 12. The oft-injured forward is still finding his way in GU’s system.

“As soon as he does that (cracks top 12), then he can suit up and travel and all that. There’ll be some opportunities if he keeps plugging away,” Few said. “There will definitely be some opportunities; some of the wings didn’t play particularly well tonight.”
Gray on becoming comfortable with new teammates: “We were pretty comfortable with each other. We were ready to come out and start beating up on people other than ourselves. It was a lot of fun to come out and get season started and get the games underway. I think a lot of things we did, we were playing off pure adrenaline and emotion. We played with a lot of energy. That’s something that will cover up a lot of mistakes. Now we have to concentrate more on our assignments and the game plan coaches draw up.”Somewhere in the bowels of the Spokesman Review website comes this photo of Meech trying to call a time out, just about the funniest and somehow typical pic of Meech.

And the coach opens the door a crack for Bol to peer through. Looks like the reserve wing position is still wide open.

I'm impressed by how fast and thorough The GU Bulletin (http://www.gonzagabulletin.com/sports/harris-first-half-flurry-sparks-blowout-win-1.930629)'s coverage is this year.

Check out the great photo album! Nice one of GJ Vilarino -

“We tried to mix some of the young guys in there, and they didn’t function so well,” Few said. “We got are main group [back] in there and built [the lead] back up again.”

And Harris appeared part of that main group. He kept two possessions alive in the opening minutes with offensive rebounds, scoring five points in back-to-back possessions. The forward scored four straight to begin the second half.

“He’s killing in practice like that,” Goodson said. “Just rolls over into the game.”

Gray’s spiffy behind-the-back pass to Matt Bouldin in the second half gave Gonzaga a 71-45 cushion, its largest lead of the contest to that point. The Bulldogs eventually increased the deficit to 27.

Jason Holmes paced the Delta Devils with 12 points. Shannon Behling, D’Angelo Jackson and Michael Mayo each contributed 10.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 all-time against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents. It was also the first meeting between the two schools.

Gonzaga travels to East Lansing, Mich., to tangle with No. 2 Michigan State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

“They have a hall-of-fame coach on the bench there,” Few said. “Obviously a team that is picked to make it to the championship game and battle for the national championship. To play them on their home floor this early is a tough task, but a good opportunity.

“Just go in and play,” Goodson said. “Don’t tense up cause their Michigan State and their No. 2. Just go out and play with confidence.”

Krem.com has videos: highlights and interviews with Few, Manny, Bouldin, and Steven.

Good stuff. Players are looking forward to getting a chance to play MSU Tues. night.

Thanks, ZN.

I think a lot of things we did, we were playing off pure adrenaline and emotion.

A lot of the ragged play was due, imo, to the guys trying too hard, playing too frenetically. First game stuff. That should change as the season goes.

Mississippi Zag, I'm just seeing the one video so far (http://www.krem.com/sports/basketball). Got any links?

Never mind. Just found it here (http://www.krem.com/video/featured-videos/gonzagavsmississippivalley-70123167.html).

Good Stuff as always ZN.

I was a big supporter of playing 9-10 guys, but after last night I have changed my mind. Few's comments suggest the same. I'll bet he circles the wagons with his starting five against MSU. Barring fouls, I can see 30 minutes plus for 3-4 players.

The experimenting seems just about over.

Incidentally, Jim Meehan mentions in his blog that the 2009-10 Media Guide is out, but I'm not seeing it posted on gozags.com online. First one to get a link is honor bound to post it here quick like a bunny!

Back to the interviews, did Coach Few sound just a tad peeved at the reporters' quetions? I was half expecting him to pull a Dan Akroyd James J. Kilpatrick, "Jane, you ignorant ..."

Great interviews. I like the player's confidence and attitude about Tue's game at Mich St. I also felt MVS was fast, had very quick guards, and were good outside shooters. Mich St will have much better bigs, however. I'm anxious to see how Elias and Bobby match up.

Few was not very pleased with his "wings" play. Arop certainly did not play as well as I had imagined he could play. Hopefully it was Freshman jitters. Olynyk played well, but his shooting was not good either.

This photo of Rob really needs Mee in here to attach a caption ...

I don't know .... that right there is what you call your physical specimen ...

But he's got such a great sense of humor. I have no problem imagining him making intimidating faces at himself in the mirror in the morning and saying in his best Fernando-Lamas-Billy-Crystal accent, "Darling, you look MAHVELOUS!"

How often have we had a BIG...go sprawling on the floor to fight for a ball?
Rob went "flat out" last night 3 times. Right there on the floor with Meech.
I cannot remember anyone doing that. Josh maybe in his younger days did thsat a few times. Rob's winning my heart with his toughness and hustle. Completely transformed kid. Meech is just pure speed and toughness. Far flung heroes and players. Amazing how Tommy finds these kids. And then there's Elias.....<rolls eyes> plays on an entirely diffrent level. We fill in a few more slots and this talent is FF bound in the next 2 years. I hope we can keep Harris down on the farm....it's obvious he's not like other kids in their early years here.
