We might be breaking out the sheet music to the German national anthem at some point if Mr. Harris' debut foreshadows the impact he'll have on the 09-10 edition of the Zags. And Robert Sacre ! The big fellah looked nimble out there. . .Matt & Steven also looked good.

So who's the inaugural GUnit of the new season, Zag fans ?

Matt Bouldin , with Harris and Sacre a close 2nd

Rob Sacre - really had a breakout game on the offensive end.

Wow, sloppy but fun to watch. Can't wait to see the boys as they get used to each other.

Team win - GUnit to the team.

but.........Harris and Sacre are gonna do some damage.

Go!! Zags!!!

It's hard to pick between the four:

Bouldin 22 p, 6 r, 5 a, 1 s
Sacre 17 p, 9 r, 3 b
Gray 16 p, 5 r, 7 a, 1 s
Harris 18 p, 7 r, 1 s

Harris was especially impressive considering he only played 19 minutes while Gray and Sacre played 27 each and Bouldin played 35.

I'm going to vote Bouldin though, he is a great leader that never looks rattled. He stepped up at the right time and had 17 points in the second half.

I'll break ranks ... Gray had 7 assists ... to go along with 16 points ... good aggressiveness ... what I saw tonight reminded me of Bouldin's '08-'09.

Some very nice solid performances.

Not even a doubt it was one of the bigs. I'll go with Harris because he was the only player that looked like a veteran in the first half.

Matt's first half was downright abysmal.

The bigs were well fed, Harris looked sharp and Rob did his best not to put the ball on the floor. While helter skelter, it was a bang watching our "scrappy" pups. Loved Meech getting by 3 defenders. Speed muscel and sizems got it. Most important this team has confidence in the name of, Matt Bouldin and he loves this team.

but I think this was a important game for Gray. If he is that agressive he will have a breakout season....very impressed with his all around game.

I went with Gray. With some of the talk going around that his heart wasn't in it anymore it was nice to see him come with passion and aggressiveness. He's a vital part of this team and he seems to understand that.

Liked Sacre on both ends of the floor. Harris set the tone early clearly a man among boys, but in the end it was Matt's ability to come back from a poor first half to lead the team in the 2nd that impressed me most and would earn my nod.

The first unit looked tough and reasonably coherent for a first game. I say Few won't use his bench as much against MSU.

I gave my vote to Bouldin. I was excited to see how Elias could energize the game, but Matt was the glue that held it together for the whole game. I thought Sacre was good too, but I have to say, I was impressed with Grant. He isn't the fastest or the biggest, but he moves his feet and was in the right place most of the time. He understands the game, and his role in it. I thought Will played hard too. I wish there were more passes at the rim for him, not 3 feet away were he has to make a move. Just a toss towards the rim for a slam.

You could go with almost anyone, however, I'd go with Elias Harris.

In these blowout games that are over by halftime and everyone gets involved in the scoring, I like to go with the guy who set the tone early. Why? Because that was the situation with the highest leverage- when the game was still close. Boldin and Gray were both efficient, Sacre was solid, and even Foster looked good in his cameo. But this game was contested for about 15-20 minutes, and I weigh that span more heavily in my considerations.

Elias Harris gets my vote this evening. His 18 points on 6-8 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line plus 7 rebounds was an impressive start to his collegiate career. Quite a first game for the young man.

Steven Gray (16 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists), Robert Sacre (17 points and 9 rebounds) and Matt Bouldin (22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists) all played pretty well in their first game of the season. The Zags will present a difficult match up during the upcoming season if they can show that same kind of inside - outside balance.

Go Zags!

Harris is new to the system - otherwise I would give it to the WCC MVP.

I agree with the general idea here, but I disagree that this was one of those blow-out games that was over by halftime. We certainly had an opportunity to put them away early, but didn't get it done. With 14:45 (or so) to go in the second half Bouldin got around a screen and challenged a three point shot that came up short ... he ran the right lane and when the ball was reversed left to right nailed a three pointer that took the game from 11 points to 14. Had that sequence gone differently, they'd have been within 8 points instead of 14. At that point Bouldin took over and ended the game. That's one of the reasons I'd give it to Bouldin today. Harris is just as deserving with my ONLY criticism being that he picked up a silly foul in the first half that limited his minutes.

Thanks for starting the thread Reno! I wasn't sure if anyone would remember. I've been at the casino, then my dang phone went dead.

I actually can't watch the game until I get home tomorrow morn, but based on what I have seen and heard, I logged a vote for Harris.

I'm anxious to see the game and hear everyone's thoughts on the board (well...for the most part, haha).

I voted for Sacre but upon reflection, I would vote for the entire starting five. Why? When you think about what each player did and how they contributed, it was straight out of our highest hopes play book. Each of the starting five played THEIR role the way they need to, for the team to excel. And that includes Meech who may be the fastest human alive.

When you watch it, be prepared for some ragged edges. For me it was maddening to watch. MVSU plays street ball. The problem is.....they play some pretty good street ball. Helter skelter chaos. And they were throwing up prayers (and many times the prayers were answered). I gotta tip my hat to MSVU. They never let up and played extremely hard the entire game.

Don't expect anything smooth. The Zags beat them at their own game. They "out street balled" them. OK, that is a stretch. Steven did a nice job of feeding the post on occasion and there was good ball movement at times.

Edit: Sorry to get off topic, but I couldn't help but prepare WooHoo for his viewing in the morning. The Zags will look a like a young team.....except for the returning players and Harris.

Steven Gray. I loved his 7 assistsd. His passing was really good for the first game. His shooting was solid too, as well as his D. He's going to have a real good year. He and Bouldin are an awesome back court.

but I have to go with Steven Gray. The silent assassin, who a lot of people on this board have already written off for the year (???) played a great all around game last night. He and Matt outside, with Rob and Elias inside, will be fun to watch all year.

Also, Steven is the new "hair" guy this year, loved the Ronnie "fro" and beard.

Steven is going to have a break-out year.

Elias showed me a move that I had not seen a Zag player do since JP left. He got the ball down low, put his butt into the defender and dribbled three times backing the defender down each time then went up hard with a close in jump hook. His butt may not be as big as JP's but it was a great move to see again.

Wow, Elias takes the vote in a landslide.

And yes, MickMick, thanks for the 'heads up'. There were spurts during this game where I was going "sheesh...do that a few times and Mich St. wins by 30". But there were ALSO some times where I saw flashes of brilliance. This team really reminds me of a zags team of old, just a bunch of kids who love to play baseketball, and will leave their heart on the floor.

mmmh maybe this question is silly, but what means the word Gunit means?(something like player of the game, but i like to to know the background of the word or the context)

Till now i only heard this word in context to a rap group, but i think that ain't related ;) It is a shortcut which start with Gonzaga Uni ... or a word i didn't know?

Essentially, it's the board's version of the "Player of the Game", and you are correct, we are sorta making a play on words since Gonzaga University is shortened to "GU"...it's the G-Unit...and, I know that the rapper 50-cent used the term in his songs a few years back...and I have no idea what it means! haha, but we went with it.

Been having this vote for probably 2-3 years now I think? So...who did you vote for? And welcome to the board!!

i didn't vote because i didn't see the game, but i read here a bit to follow Harris progress so this thread is intresting for me because many user explain why they vote for X and maybe even mention why they didn't vote for Y.

I've been waiting for you Uber.

But...here is my question...I used to have a totally seperate thread "Season Totals of the GUnits" and would keep a running total, but I would also pick a poster quote to go along with it. Since we now use the poll method, it's quite obvious who the winner is...so it's almost redundant to post ANOTHER thread stating who the winner was...

I don't know. I'll have to think about it.

But the other thread is the season total thread, correct? Plus it contains the quote so it does add to this single game GUnit thread. Uber thinks you should keep the season total going. Also, when posting the each single game thread, Reno or you should emphasize that a vote in the poll is not sufficient, each poster needs to state a quick reason or even say ditto on someone's reason. Not enough replies in this thread for how many votes--if you read the thread no one would think Harris was a clear winner.

The "Running Total" thread should still contain a Gozagswoohoo quote selection. . .it would be like a day without sunshine if it didn't.

I used the poll only to save time counting up the votes, WooHoo. . .nuthin' says we have to have a poll; it just makes life easier and it gets more participation than the old format. If someone wants to vote without leaving a comment, that's OK by me.

I will be at the hospital for the game tomorrow night so if GUnit duty is called for, it will have to fall on your capable time-zone challenged shoulders. . .

I'll try to get the thread posted as soon as the game ends.
