From Andy Katz today (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/preview2009/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=4647781):
Jan. 2: Gonzaga vs. Illinois (Chicago): The Zags will have played at Michigan State, gone through Maui, hosted Washington State, Wake Forest and Davidson, and gone to New York to play Duke before this game. Yet, it might be one of their toughest. If the Zags are still standing in playing the upstart Illini, then you'll know they should be taken seriously this season.

He forgot to mention Oklahoma, who the Zags play three nights before Illinois.

I predict Gonzaga heads to Chicago with a 12-2 record, and departs with a 13-2 mark.

2 losses going into that game? Wow. That sure is an optimistic outlook.

No way that could happen. Impossible.

I am being negative? Not at all.

The Zags would have only played 13 games by Illinois game so they could only come in 11-2 or better 13-0 and leave 12-2 or 14-0. You could count the exhibition but the NCAA wont. They do have 15 out of conference games but the last one will be Memphis after this game on Feb 6. Hey I for 13-0 going in and 14-0 going out. :)

I hope the Zag's annual "Curse of December's End" skips this season. GU has suffered consecutive losses at the end of December in the past 3 seasons. Talk about a tough 3 days for this young team: on Dec 31st we face a tough, talented Oklahoma squad immediately followed by a Jan 2nd match-up vs Top-20 Illinois in Chicago. I hope the Zags are ready to maintain the intensity...it will be a challenge to go 2-0 against those two teams in three days.

Semester exams are Monday, December 14 - Thursday, December 17. Duke in New York is December 19th. Not a good plan in my book. The December 19th game should be against the Little Sisters of the Poor!!!

I wonder if your going to the game.

I think we'll get the win, but it will be the Zags bringing it home. ;)

Bought my tickets last week (300-level nosebleeds, but just being in the building is good enough). Illinois has a solid team. Mike Tisdale, the 7-footer, is going to be a great matchup for Rob, and Demetri McCamey is one of the 20 best point guards in the country, IMO.

The GU-Illinois game is at noon central. Later that day, at 5:30, Michigan State plays Northwestern in Evanston. So if any Chicago-area Zag fans want a little more basketball that day, that should make for a pretty good doubleheader!
