We'll all get a preview of this team's talent when they play WSU (Friday, Nov 13th) a day prior to playing us. Their game vs the Cougs doesn't appear to be televised, however--a bit odd considering what's on in that time slot instead (7:00 pm):

Anybody have a clue about this squad's talent?

Not a lot of info on the Mississippi Valley State official web site:

In any case, Kiddwell will take a wide swing and predict the Zags win by 15-30 (a VERY wide swing). :)

MVSU's official schedule says the game is on Friday, the 13th, not Thursday. And Seth's column says no games (except the ones tonight which were contracted for several years ago) can be played before Friday.

You're right: the 13th! Thanks! In that case, Kiddwell picks the Zags to win by a 17-32 margin!

Here's MVSU's Rivals team page (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=teamreports-2009-ncaab-mbe&prov=sportsxchange&type=team_report). I don't know if it's subscription only.
Key Early-season Games: The Delta Devils get a total of one home game in all of November and December, so they’d better take advantage of their Nov. 19 contest with Champions Baptist. MVSU travels to Washington State and Gonzaga to start the regular season, followed by the Chicago Invitational, which matches the Devils up with Iowa State and Saint Louis on the road. MVSU will be tested early, but as long as the players see the games as learning experiences that will help in SWAC play, the Devils will be OK.

Brutal for a team coming off a 7-25 season last year with a second year coach, Sean Woods, a former assistant at Kentucky.

Good luck, Delta Devils!

The Delta Devils are picked to finish near the middle of the pack in the SWAC by most preseason publications. They have 9 new players on the roster, and 7 of them are D-1 or juco transfers. They are coached by Sean Woods, the ex-Kentucky star. The best returnee is 6-7 power forward Shannon Behling (10.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG). The best newcomer appears to be 6-5 wing Cor-J Cox.

They'll be better than they were last season, but they are destined to lose a lot of games.

Help settle a lunch hour argument. I assume MVS is being paid to play (and hopefully lose) against GU, which is fine. The question was how much GU pays MVS. Is it in 6 figures as was argued by my lunch buddies? That number does not make sense to me, as K-2 holds maybe 6000 people at an average of 30 per seat (with a lot of free students) which only would be 180K gross (minus students).

I was thinking maybe $25,000 - $50,000 max, maybe plus plane fare. Anybody actually know the numbers?

Go Bulldogs! Get Bigger!

The Zags are also getting TV money. No clue how much. :)

Probably in the $80,000 to $100,000 range. You may have lost the argument.

A very worthy read. Know thine enemy, as they say...

In his first year as head coach of Mississippi Valley State, Sean Woods found the going a little tough, to the tune of a seven-win season.

But Woods also found some players that can hopefully help him turn things around in the coming years. Three starters and six letter winners overall return to the Delta Devils, as Woods looks to speed things up even more with a new crop of recruits.

Much more in the link above.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't GU impose a few rules on an early season opponent last year, including a rule that they not play full court press defense? Are there any similar rules in effect for the Mississippi game this year?
