I found a thread on the Marquette board (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=15350.msg145852%3Btopicseen)while running my daily Zag ball google. The thread was bemoaning the fact that Marquette was #3 in terms of basketball expenses, per a post on bbstate.com.
The post copied below was the one that triggered the google hit:
All that money, how come we can't land a top big?

I'm surprised Marquette is 3rd, especially with our lack of success in the post season. Love that we have the money, and the program is well maintained, don't let us ever fall to DePaul level(88)

Looking at these, schools like Butler(133) and Gonzaga(93) impress me even more.Somebody else on the thread mentioned that the expenses are meaningless unless you know the revenues. bballstate.com (http://www.bbstate.com/schools/GONZ)shows this for Gonzaga:

(I saved that screen print to post here in case the page was for subscribers only, which I'd encourage. For $21 per year, bbstate.com is one of the best bargains among sports websites, especially for its statistical data.)

Interesting to me was the cost per win shown, with Gonzaga a little bit above the pack at $103,431. I ran some numbers and determined the average of the costs per win of the 337 schools ranked was 137,434.91, and the median was $105,498.93, so it looks to me like we're getting a pretty good bang for the buck.

Compare our cost of $103,431 per win to these schools, which topped the list for most expensive cost per win:

337 672,373.69 Rice (C-USA)
336 537,428.00 Duke (ACC)
335 476,896.94 Kentucky (SEC)
334 434,751.69 Michigan (BIG10)
333 430,833.88 Boston College (ACC)
332 425,233.84 Cincinnati (BIGEAST)
331 421,526.25 Northwestern (BIG10)
330 409,810.66 Oregon State (PAC10)
329 398,027.00 Iowa (BIG10)
328 387,690.19 Oklahoma State (BIG12)
327 376,473.56 Saint John's (BIGEAST)
326 365,463.19 Loyola Marymount (WCC)
325 358,321.59 Marquette (BIGEAST)
324 344,358.88 Colorado State (MWC)
323 339,864.38 Texas Christian (MWC)
322 338,634.19 Rutgers (BIGEAST)
321 334,506.19 Providence (BIGEAST)
320 332,861.84 Arkansas (SEC)
319 326,731.88 Syracuse (BIGEAST)
318 325,642.72 Florida (SEC)

We get an incredible bang for our buck with the salary's of our coaches. They could all make more money other places which is another reason why we are so fortunate to have such a great staff. Many basketball programs we fax in March have coaches salaries which are higher than our cost of program listed here. What did Calipari just get, $5MM???? That would be double...

Texas Christian ranks at #37 with $4,758,101. That's what you call incompetence.

I love that LMU is on the list. When you only win so many games they become expensive. That is the case where if they could play .500 ball that Cost Per Win would drop significantly.

obviously the cost/win is low because we win so much!

Always love the numbers. Thanks for the link. I seem to recall this site some time ago.

Gaels at #78 at $62,552.60 per win. Looks like we get more bang for our buck.

I wish I could get behind the numbers and fill in some blanks. I think I used to have a link to the source for that info, but one of my computer crashes lost it.

One interesting thing to me was the reporting of Athletics Revenues vs. Athletics Expenses. Like every other school I checked on (i.e., Syracuse, Duke, and others), SMC's revenues ($10,917,912) matched their expenses. Gonzaga, however, shows a profit for Athletics:

Any clue why that would be? Other than the obvious ... WE GOOD!
