Here's an interesting "under the radar" situation:

A columnist at SLAM, attending "The Rock Summer League" to check out a matchup of traditional WCAC (Washington DCís Catholic league) powers DeMatha and Gonzaga, was disappointed because an incoming Gonzaga freshman from Maryland the columnist had heard so much about wasn't in attendance -- the boy's family has moved back to Seattle. The player: Derrick "DJ" Fenner, a 6' 5" SG who just completed 8th grade. DJ is one of three sons of Derrick Fenner, a former NFL fullback for the Seahawks and Oakland Raiders.

For more info:

It might be about time to let DJ know that there is another Gonzaga -- the University -- here in his back yard on the banks of the Spokane River. To whet your appetite for DJ, here's what Rivals had to say about him after seeing him at the Freshman All-American Camp put on last month by the University of Kentucky:

"A 6-5 swingman from Seattle, Fenner showed explosive scoring ability with a 21-point game and a 26-point, 13-rebound effort. He runs the floor extremely well, attacks the basket fearlessly, and finishes as good as anyone in the camp. At one point, I asked another onlooker if they had seen Fenner miss a shot. They could not recall one, either."

DJ's also involved in the Rotary Style Select Basketball Program. When asked about the talent associated with that program, its director listed DJ along with some other pretty fair players:

"Q. Any new prospects coming up through the ranks?
A. We have a lot of new talent coming through: Peyton Siva, Aaron Dotson, Joshua Smith, Anthony Wroten Jr., Pierre Wright, Anrio Adams, DJ Fenner, Jaamon Echols, Glen Brooks Jr., LC White, Malik Ball, Arell Hennings, Demario Hall, Alonzo Trier, Philip Winston, Elijah Foster, Anthony Childs, Jordan Kitchen, Jamar Kemp as well as many others."

Let's get mobilized, Zag nation!

I always liked his dad when he played for the Hawks. I cannot recall his life story, but I remember it being very intersting. He was a strong runner though.

Will be interesting to follow his son's career. Seattle is a hot bed of talent!

Go zags!!

The staff likes Anrio Adams from Franklin HS. I'm sure they're fully aware of Fenner and if he's good enough or not. The coaches fly out today for recruiting.
