Mike Roth was one of four Division I basketball AD's, out of 329 Division I schools, named to receive the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) announced Tuesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA (http://www.nacda.com/sports/convention/spec-rel/061609aac.html)).
Mike Roth, Gonzaga University, West Region

Mike Roth is in his 12th year as Gonzaga University's athletics director, and under his leadership, the Bulldogs' athletics programs have grown from a recognized regional power to a national fixture. After taking over as acting athletics director in July 1997 and being named athletics director in September 1998, the men's basketball team has flourished into one of the nation's elite programs. The Bulldogs have made 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances beginning with their fairy tale Elite Eight run. The Gonzaga athletics program also has had extreme success in the classroom during Roth's tenure. The Bulldogs are first in total number of student-athletes named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll since its inception in 2004 and have maintained a 3.1 GPA or higher since fall 1998. Roth has also overseen the upgrades of multiple facilities. In 2003, Gonzaga added the Kermit Rudolf Fitness Center for Gonzaga students, faculty and staff. In 2004, GU opened the McCarthey Athletic Center, a 6,000-seat basketball arena which is the home for the Bulldog men's and women's basketball teams as well as the Harry A. Green Indoor Rowing Center. He has also overseen the opening of the Patterson Baseball Complex, a new soccer field, sports medicine center and a student-athlete academic lab.
The reference to the student-athlete academic lab inspired me to track down a link I'd lost to a page on gozags.com, describing the support services Gonzaga offers to its student athletes (http://www.gozags.com/sports/student-services/spec-rel/gonz-academic-support.html). Pretty darned impressive stuff!

Parts of Gonzaga's academic support plan for student athletes has been lifted and pasted into the NCAA's official Model Practices (http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?key=/ncaa/NCAA/Academics%20and%20Athletes/Education%20and%20Research/Academic%20Support/advising.html).

This thread needs a pic! An old pic!

I sent Mike an email just over a year ago about a GU sport program. Part of it included some venting on the historical support for the program by the athletic department. I got a return email asking when a good time to call was, as Mike said he was happy discuss the issues in person. A week or so later he spent 15 minutes with me on the phone and cleared up a lot of the questions I had. I was very impressed that he took the time to both reply to my email and to ask what a good time to call me was. He's also delivered on the first steps of the vision for the program that he laid out. I think GU is very lucky to have a guy like Mike Roth running our athletic department.

Thanks for this one Zag Native. Obviously he's done a great job, and it's fantastic to see him get recognized. I think Few is close behind now to getting a national award as coach of the year.

Congrats to Mike Roth and his family.
