View Full Version : If Sparty can aim for FF in Detroit...

Detroit is a stones throw from Michigan State and Izzo had the goal (and motivation) of making it there all season long, soooooooooooooo.....

Next March the Spokane Arena will be home to a West Subregional, the first two rounds. I think it's realistic of Few and team to aim for a spot in the Spokane Arena, which means a 4 seed or better. If Villanova was allowed to do this as a 3 seed, then so should Gonzaga.

Extra motivation for the fellas next season?

Doubt it. Do you really think a team has "extra" motivation to earn a high seed in the Tourney? That's not to say they don't consider the possibility but I'm sure they're not telling themselves "now we'll work harder!" But, it would be great for the city, wouldn't it? :D

It would be great, indeed. I'm sure Gonzaga won't play more than three games in the arena next season, to keep the team eligible to play in the NCAA Tourney there.

i thought i read, maybe on this board, that there is a mileage limitation to how close a team can play to their home arena or campus and that this disqualifies gonzaga from playing at the arena...

anyone know anything (concrete) on this for sure (not interested in speculation to the other side)?

I know Villanova played their first and second round games in the Wachovia Center that is located 12 miles away from the Nova campus. That should answer your question.

If GU plays less than three games in the Arena next year they will be eligible to play there during the tournament.

doesnt answer my question at all, being that gonzaga is much closer to the arena than 12 miles...

It's the number of appearance in your own Arena flooor ( it's very specific) that seems to be the gateway.. more that 3 and you're out. Anything less aloows the team to stay home.

There is no proximity stipulation. In order to play close to home at team must 1) play three or fewer games at the location 2) not be the host school.

yeah, that part (3 game limit) is well known - villanova did it a couple years ago too when they were a 1 seed. i coulda sworn i heard from gu fans a few yrs back (when the tourney rd 1 and 2 were in spokane - the durant year) that there was no way GU could play there because of pure proximity that supercedes the 3 game limit rule... and i cant find any solid ncaa document besides the extremely dumbed down list of guidelines on ncaa.com that would say whether or not this is a rule.

nobody remembers that? i must have gotten it from someone off the board.

If the Zags do not play more than 3 games at the Arena.

Here is a link about applying for the ticket lottery next year:

http://www.spokanearena.com/ncaa/

It says that only the Cougars cannot play in that Arena.:)

I believe they couldn't play at the arena because GU was the host that year.

That Georgia wasn't a great game. Pargo got a headache at the end, remember? Also do you guys see this team getting a 4 seed? What am I saying, of course Royal Blue bleeders believe this team can do it, why not?

6 miles! You must be taking the really, really, scenic route.

GU was not the host that year. They got a #10 seed that year (in Sacramento) and weren't given a protected seed that seeds 1-4 are supposed to get.

I've never heard of a proximity rule like the one you speak of. I remember that year discussing with others the chance of GU playing well enough to get placed in the Spokane "pod". At this point if you can't find the rule, I think you should assume it never existed.
