According to this, Calipari is having difficulty but has to make up his mind by this afternoon. It is now approaching evening in Lexington:

"Calipari was talking, however, just not to the press. He stopped by a doughnut shop he frequents on Tuesday, where he told some of the regulars he needed to make a decision by the afternoon."

It sounds like he has a sure thing at Memphis - a great program, a city that supports him and a continuous flock of top-tier talent.

Is this all about money? I just cannot image having to coach at UK where they demand a national championship every damn year!

It is the history, the money, and the hoops hotbed he'll be stepping in to.

Calipari was offered $35M over 8 years, or $4.375M per year.

Meantime, Ky. Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo along with five key administration members will take a voluntary 10 percent pay cut in 2009 to save the state $100,000.

Beshear, who makes $124,000 a year, said Monday that the salary cuts are not a publicity stunt but a symbolic way to show he is "willing to share the pain" in pending state budget cuts.

Calipari was offered $35M over 8 years, or $4.375M per year.

Meantime, Ky. Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo — along with five key administration members — will take a voluntary 10 percent pay cut in 2009 to save the state $100,000.

The difference between politics and sports is that the Wildcats completely reciprocate funds spent and funds taken in. When you hire a political official, there is not a direct correlation between his/her salary and how much money they make the state. With a public college coach, especially Kentucky, you may pay them a high salary, but they almost always deliver with bringing more money back in through ticket sales, sponsorships, and general PR.
