According to my quick compilation, here are some facts on Sw16 teams from this tourney and the 10 previous:

9 of 11 -
Duke*

7 of 11 -
Kansas*
Mich St*

6
UCLA
UConn**

5
Arizona
Kentucky
UNC*
Pitt
Texas
GONZAGA

4 - 8 teams
3 - 7 teams
2 - 12 teams
1 - 34 teams

In the past 11 years, the 176 Sw16 slots have been filled by 72 teams.

So in the past 11 years, 11 teams have made at least 5 trips to the Sw16 and GU is one of those teams. Or another way to look at it - in the past 11 years, only 5 teams have been to more Sw16s than GU.

* = championship(s) won during the time period

(these #s are subject to verification by someone that gets paid to research these things)

Lothar, did you figure that out all on your own? That's pretty impressive.

Whoa, we got the same numbers as the powder blues? They'll be in denial about that.

In the past 11 years UNC has actually missed a tourney or two, while GU has been every year. Of course UNC has won a title in that time...

The Matt Doherty years. Great recruiter, had issues as head coach.

Really puts into perspective how blessed we have been as Zag fans and really makes me want to tell every talking head who says the Zags are underachievers to shut their yap.

It wasn't that he was a particularly good recruiter (he's quickly disproving that theory). It was more that he successfully reined in kids who would have come to UNC regardless of who the coach was. Doherty was a ridiculously inept coach hired by our ridiculously inept athletic director. The result? A second-round flameout his first year with a team that should have gone to the Final Four, then the infamous 8-20 season his second, followed by a 19-16, NIT year the next, which resulted in his firing... and the subsequent hiring of Roy Williams (praise be to God).

No remotely knowledgeable UNC fan would be in any type of denial. From 99-04, the program was extraordinarily mediocre (even though there was a Final 4 in 2000 and a #1 ranking in 2001).

Roy came back for the 03-04 season and that team was inconsistent at best. Once 04-05, UNC was back off and runnin.
