Rumor has it, as they say. Eastern's season is over (fell short of Big Sky Tourney) so it makes sense.

Not one website even has St Mary's on the bubble for making the tournament so if they don't win the WCC tournament what sense does it make?

Lunardi has them as one of the 'next four out', so they're within 8 places of getting to the tourney according to him. Also, if they can show the Mills is up to full strength, then it might really be worth it. As long as the selection committee is paying attention.

I believe that Patty Mills is the only collegian that participated in Men's Basketball in the '08 Olympics. He performed very well in Beijing.

Without Mills -- SMC (to their huge credit) has been able to maintain a decent RPI (as of this morning it is at 48). They, along with the WCC Commish (who is wired, btw) have been doing an incredibly effective job "working" the NCAA Selection committee on their status.

If Mills can come back -- and they can reach the WCC final -- they'd be very close. Another game 4 days later (with a further healed Mills) would show that they COULD be a very good pick as an at large entry come Selection Sunday. After all, they were 18-1 before Patty's injury.

Good luck to the Gaels (and hats off to our conference for helping).

A win over a team that can't finish in the top 6 of the Big Sky? And this would prove that Mills is healthy? (scratches thinning hair).

Every questionable team this time of year is desperate. If other bubble teams (BT) could schedule an extra game to possibly prove themselves to the Selection Committee (SC), they'd do it. As it is now, every BT and/or conference does all they can to convince the SC that they belong in the tourney. Some of this is thru the press and a lot of it is behind the scenes - tons of docs, stats, videos delivered to the SC members.

Personally I don't think the potential positives outwieght the potential negatives regarding adding a game vs a mid 200s RPI team in a game noones going to see. If SMC's goal is to convince the SC that Mills is ready to go, they should just set up a live webcam in their gym that the SC can access any time Mills is practicing. It would cost a lot less than paying some team to lose to you by 30.

It is my belief that the rationale behind this purported game would be to showcase Patty Mills' health -- to show that he's recovered from the broken hand and would be able to play at a high level in the NCAA tourney.

Hope not. That would take them out of the top 50 RPI, and give us 3 less top 50 RPI wins for the season. Like others have said, I don't see the selection committee saying, "Wow, they beat a terrible team, we should let them play in the tournament."

I think it makes sense for SMC. They don't have much to lose, and a lot to gain.

It'll probably hurt Gonzaga, however. If SMC's RPI drops to below 50 that might cause GU a seeding spot, seeing as how GU has two (and potentially three) wins over them.

Oh well, SMC has to look out for its own interests. Hopefully it works and the WCC has two teams in the dance.

if their season is over, why should the players want to keep playing ?

Don't know about the players, but I'm sure the EWU coach would love another 10 days of practice. If it's a one time deal, then there may be 40,000 or 50,000 good reasons why the EWU athletic department is interested.

make it to the WCC finals ?

Game still on ? And if not, how much will EWU get for the cancellation? A forfeit ?

Wow! That would be a pretty expensive game for St. Marys. Also, a gamble. The Gaels must be thinking that Patty Mills won't be much of a force in the WCC Tourney. Hopefully, he will be 100% healed up when they play Eastern.

The Eagles agreed to play one more game, and travel to Saint Mary's next Friday evening.

Eastern Washington (12-17) thought its season ended last Saturday when a loss to Portland State eliminated them from the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Saint Mary's (24-5) will play in the West Coast Conference tournament this weekend. But the Gaels wanted an extra game to get recovering star Patrick Mills more playing time as they expect to continue playing in March Madness.

Why would anyone here not want SMC to win? It's better for the conference, better for GU, and while I don't think it'll give SMC much better of a shot at the NCAAs, it theoretically could, I suppose.

I will double down on the Go Eagles chant! Why wouldn't I want SMC to win, perhaps because I hold degrees from both EWU and GU (duh). Also, I doubt the outcome of the EWU/SMC will affect GU's seeding, but if it does, have faith that we can play through it! No way in heck do I root for any California school to beat one of my alma maters!!!!

I personally like the idea of a game in between our tourney and the NCAA's. We always seem to go flat with 10 days off. Maybe we should look for a worthy opponent to tide us over and keep us battle ready! :)
