View Full Version : Sacre to Redshirt - Link inside

It's official.

Gonzaga reserve center Robert Sacre, who has been sidelined for more than two months after re-injuring his foot, has decided not to try to return to the court this season. Hes eligible for a medical redshirt, so hell be a sophomore for the 2009-2010 season.

If Sacre had played in any of GUs remaining games, he would have lost the opportunity for a medical redshirt.

I feel its the best thing, said Sacre, a 7-footer who played in five games in November and early December. I feel good and I want to take the risk and do it, but the best thing for me right now is to redshirt.

A healthy, practiced, well-integrated Sacre would have done wonders for this team. A Sacre coming in for spot minutes in a few games wouldn't have. I think it's the right call, as hard as I'm sure it was to make.

Good for him. I think he made a good call, although we will miss him in the tournament. I can't wait to see the damage he will do next year at 100% with his fellow Canadians. :D

A tough decision for Rob. I support him.

I think it is the right decision. Rob can be scary good in three years!

Keep the chin up Rob, and keep the high five's coming from the sidelines. You'll be missed on the court, but your time will come...love ya man.

Go Zags!

The best is yet to come. We're with you big guy.

Go!! Zags!!!

 bravo to Sacre for making a very wise and mature decision. I would have loved to have seen a healthy Sacre contribute to this Zag team in March, but unfortunately the reality is that he is not 100% healthy or game ready. No sense in risking an injury at this point in the season and potentially sacrificing a red-shirt and having Sacre play with long-term foot problems. Heytvelt is a perfect example of how a foot injury can really impact a player.

I'm glad that Sacre is past this decision and can focus on getting 100% healthy...

I'm so glad he chose to redshirt!

Just think if Will had redshirted his freshman year? He would have two more years with us, and at the rate he has improved just since last year, by senior year would stop any drives in the lane, averaging 20 minutes and 6 blocks per game (according to my Magic 8 Ball).

Good for Rob, I am sure it was a tough decision for him to make, but in the end the extra year will benefit both Rob and the Zags more.

Over the summer he will be able to improve his fitness.

The best decision for Sacre and the Zags in my opinion. I would rather he be healthy for next year.

I guarantee that during his redshirt senior year, we will all look back at this as a great decision and an important one for the development of our program. Couldn't be happier. I would of course love to have him out there to help our seniors get as far as we can, but we've gone this far without him already. See you next year, Rob!

Get well Big Guy. I would have loved to have seen him bust some heads...next year I guess.

I can live with this decision. It will be fun to watch RS next year.

It's a perfect decision because he made it. And we all know that he made it after much thinking and talking it over with the important people involved in this decision. This is not only the best for Rob it's the best for GU too. I believe if Rob felt he could have helped the Zags improve their chances of going deep in the tournament that he would have. He just seems like such a team guy to me. I have yet to see any selfishness in this great Zag. And he will continue to be the best cheerleader the team has. You have my fullest support Mr. Sacre. Right on!!!

Good decision, Rob. Work hard over the summer!

We're going to be so loaded down low next year!!!!

If Rob would or could have come back a few weeks back, it may have made sense -

I'm sure this was a difficult decision for Rob, but it will bode well for the Zags the next few years. He is a force and will be even stonger in years to come.

Certainly he would have had some time to get back into game shape and loose the rust. I think we will see that in Mills assuming he is "ready" for WCC games.

Very pleased we'll have Big Rob on the floor in the future.

No brainer on the decision.
