That list is hilarious. Thanks for posting.

Speaking of mascots, did anybody watch the mascot from Miami of Ohio when they were in Spokane for the Tourney? Maybe the lamest mascot ever. The big bird just sat on the ground for the whole game, leaning back against the front row seats, head slumped over, not watching the game or reacting to anything on the court. It really looked like the guy inside the costume had passed out.

My favorite mascot at the Spokane tourney site was the New Mexico State guy. It was a dude dressed up in ultra fancy cowboy get-up (think Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future II) with colorful chaps and a ten gallon hat. He didn't do much besides twirl his pistols. He looked like a cross between the dude from the Village People and something out of the Will Rogers Follies.

Speaking of NMSU, what the hell is an Aggie? I tried to google it, but couldn't find much. According to a couple of sites, an Aggie is term used to describe someone who attends a land grant school, i.e., an 'agriculturalist.' Is that right?

Ah yes. I remember keggy. I had no idea he was an official mascot. I also didn't know I went to Dartmouth.

I can't believe that USD's or St. Marys giant blow up balloon characters were not included in that list they gotta be the ugliest things in the WCC. To be honest other than Spike and perhaps the LMU lion most of the WCC mascots look pretty lame to me.

Thank goodness, most of their faces are covered. They should at least get paid for making fools of themselves, like the St. Josephs Hawk. At least the Hawk gets a scholarship as long as the wings don't wear out.:lmao:

Correctomundo. Several schools are nicknamed Aggies, with Texas A&M probably the most prominent. Some other schools also known as Aggies are NMSU, Oklahoma State, and Kansas St. I know that Oklahoma St was once called Oklahoma A&M (Agricultural and Mechanical). With Aggie as part of the name it's easy to see why the nickname evolved.

I thought as far as Oklahoma State was concerned, I thought Aggie was more of an "unofficial" name ... or did they become the Cowboys when the name of the school was changed to Oklahoma State University in 1957?

Terp, I wasn't thinking in terms of "official" nicknames. The term Aggie here in OK is used in the pejorative by most. Oklahoma A&M teams were known as the Tigers before adopting the Pistol Pete Mascot and becoming the Cowboys. Here is a more official list of Aggies.

In the since no one asked but you should know dept: OSU, Wyoming, and NMSU used to have mascots that were almost dead ringers for each other. I believe NMSU and Wyoming have made some changes in the last few years. I think there was a lawsuit about this too in regards to the various "rights" of using same.

NMSU took away Pistol's pistols and gave him a rope. I think Wyoming took away their Pistol's gun too. All three were called "Pistol Pete"

You guys are crazy, the best mascot at the Spokane games was the first mascot for Arkansas (they had two). The first one came on in the pregame, and was a large inflated costume about 10 feet tall. The mascot went to center court, and would have basketballs stuffed inside its snout; it would then proceed to rock back and forth and the ball would fire out of the snout. He never made one, but was pretty consistently rimming them out from half court.

The St Mary's mascot along with all the logos are being changed for next year's basketball season. :)
