Not a Zag-like performance from the free throw line. I hope this doesn't become a Zag trend to shoot near 70% from the charity stripe.

Another interesting look at these stats reveal the Zags are 4th in the league in FTA (free throw attempts)... a stat that Gonzaga usually dominates in the conference each year.

very good point, do we attribute this to lack of post presence? maybe not being as aggressive and going to the whole, not sure, but I was surprised no one but GU was shooting over 70%

Check out these team FT shooting percentages:

Louisville = 65.2%
Mizzou = 66.3%
Pitt = 66.7%
Oklahoma = 68.0%
Clemson = 68.6%
Michigan State = 68.7%
Memphis = 68.8%
UConn = 68.8%
Marquette = 70.5%
Wake Forest = 71.2%
Duke = 72.3%
Kansas = 72.5%

About the only highly rated team that shoots free throws very well is North Carolina at 76.0%. Gonzaga may not be shooting a high percentage, but their percentage fits in with what is going on among the top teams.

Of course team free throw percentages are a bit deceiving in some ways because coaches generally take out bad foul shooters during end of game situations, etc.

I continue to say this....what's confounding about this whole issue is that guys like Austin Daye and Steven Gray are not alone - there are a number of once great foul shooters throughout the land whose percentages have gone south this season. It's like a national epidemic. I don't think it can be just written off as a "lack of practice." Vitamin imbalance?

John Calipari doesn't think free throws are such a big deal, okay?

Gaels take the volume discount approach with over 60 more attempts than the next closest team... the Dons.

Yet, the fouling of Diamon Simpson proved effective for GU in the second game in Moraga as He went to the line six times shooting 12 FT and making only 6 in the first half and had no FG's. Thus, on six possessions the Gaels ave. only 1 point.... and the more enough to cover the difference in that game.

what i find humorous is all the whining amongst our fans about our shooting, yet when provided with stats we are the best. i also find very funny that all the whining by other teams fans about we get all calls is a reach as well if you at the stats. it sure is interesting to read a board full of peoples opinions and then look into the truth. you will find most statements are quite inaccurate. especially when you compare the zags to the other top teams in the country, you see that like cdc says its just not a good year in general.

what's sad is you might expect that from big athletic teams, but for WCC teams that have to live and die with less athletic players that are shooters (besides us of course) you would think they'd HAVE to be good at the free throw line???
