Polls are so fickle. I'm starting to put less and less stock in them personally, although I do see the value in them for our team.

I've expressed this before,; the polls clearly do not appreciate West Coast basketball. I think the poll is an insult to the Pac 10. Notre Dame comes out West and gets inhilated at UCLA, and yet the #1 team in the Pac 10 is #21. UCONN comes out west and goes away with a victory in overtime that was giftwrapped by the Zags. Gonzaga was the better team that day. And UCONN was #1 in the country for most of the year until Dyson went down. In my opinion the Pac 10 should have it's best team in the top 8. To say that both Michigan State and Missouri are both better than Arizona State or the UW, just doesn't seem fair to me. I've watched a lot of basketball this year, including all the BIS conferences. The Pac 10 can play with any of them.

What is not fair about the polls, is that many of the best teams in the Big East do not play home and home games. That is why, imo, that those Big East teams have better records than the other conferences, including the Pac 10. I sure hope the committee is smart enough to figure that out too.

I think Gonzaga's place is the correct place for now. We could slip to either 16 or 15 if all went our way (meaning losses for those teams above us, like Kansas and Purdue. I feel that Purdue's ranking is a little high. If you are going to punish other schools for losses without their top player playing then you should do the same same for Purdue.

looking at that poll just confirms for me what a weird year in college hoops it is. Any team from 10 to the end of the "receiving votes" category could beat any other team. Parity on steroids.

Not sure if UCLA deserves to be in the Top 25. And how does WSU score 80+. Great to see Utah and Arizona getting votes. A very strange season indeed....

Would love for them to finish in the top 25, it sure is looking less and less like a bad loss and more like a hard fight between good teams and the home team came away with +1

11. Arizona State 21-5 434 11 (tie)
19. UCLA 20-7 202 15
21. Washington 20-7 178 19

Doesn't make a lot of sense if you look at the results of leauge play.

Let's hold off on the geography bias for a second, and get some facts straight.

First off, UCLA isn't the best team in the Pac-10 right now, Arizona State and Washington each have more right to claim that title right now judging by conference records. On top of that ND is hardly looking like a great win for UCLA. They are 10th in the Big East, with a 15-11 (6-8 conference) record.

If I was a coach or a fan of a Big East team I wouldn't schedule too many tough out of conference road games either. Look at their regular season schedule. There are 5 teams in the top 12 of those polls. Then they have another 3 teams that are almost certainly top 40 competition. Why would you bother going across the country to prove yourself when you know your going to have to do it for 8 consecutive weeks in conference play?

The Pac-10 isn't terrible, but when compared to the Big East and ACC, they aren't nearly as deep or strong at the top. I don't think it's a West Coast bias, it's just that there aren't a whole lot of contenders out West right now. Nobody is talking about the SEC either. Do you think that is because of their location or because nobody in that conference has done anything to bring itself into the national championship discussion?

The Big East has 16 teams! The ACC 12...if the PAC-10 added Gonzaga, Utah, UNLV, Utah State, BYU, and San Diego State...

The Big East basically took almost every program that was good from Conference USA and made a SUPER Conference. So some years the schedule balance isn't so fair as far as home and home. Take the Big Est and split it in half and make 2 (8) team conferences and they are not that impressive.

looking something like this

UConn----------------------Pitt
Marquette------------------Louisville
Villanova-------------------West Virginia
Providence-----------------Syracuse
Cincinnati------------------Notre Dame
Georgetown----------------Seton Hall
St Johns-------------------South Florida
Rutgers--------------------Depaul

Top 3-4 teams good to great, bottom four average to awful

You are right about the SEC too, LSU is 23-4 and nobody seems to know!

not to mention i heard espn mentioning this morning that maryland may get in after their win over the tar heels - looks as though some of those not so great wins and bad losses might be turning around a little bit, every little bit helps!

OK so Michigan st IMO does not deserve to be #9 that is ridiculous they are more of a 14 or 15 right now. look at wake who has two #1 wins and they are at 13... how can michigan st get in top 10 with 0 good wins (dont bother saying texas thats ridiculous.) and Missouri as well because though they have a good record and in a good conference they do not have the wins that earn a top 10 ranking. i have officially lost hope in the polls lol

Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times has UDub at 15 and Gonzaga at 25.

You have to scroll down a few entries to see it. In the comments, a couple of Zag haters give him grief for even ranking GU.

Uh, we really shouldn't be emphasizing that point right now.

Michigan State is 9-2 vs RPI Top 50 (which includes 2-2 vs RPI Top 25).

Gonzaga is 3-4 vs RPI Top 50 (which includes 2-3 vs RPI Top 25). Although "close" doesn't count, Gonzaga also has wins over #51 Maryland and two wins over #52 Saint Mary's.
