View Full Version : ---GUnit of the Game (USF)--- 2/14

It was suggested we try doing the GUnit via a poll. . .

Closer game than expected and the gritty under-manned Dons made this visit to War Memorial Gym a tough one.

Who's your player of the game ?

( And you can't vote for Blake Wallace. . .:p )

Meech played great; he gets my vote! HM to Heytvelt.

USF 3 point shooting in general or Dior Lowhorn?

Just happy to get the win. I would be happy to give Austin the PoG but Meech was very influential tonight. This game was definitely the lesser of many evils in terms of positives.

Meech ignited our team in the first half. I'd give it to him.

Josh had a nice 1st half as well...too few touches, but had trouble covering Lowhorn who was running him off screens.

Austin finished strong.

Ira gave us some good hustle minutes.

Horrible 1st half for Jeremy...but played better in last ten minutes.

02-14-2009, 09:06 PM
I'll go with Austin.

I liked the way he upped his game in the 2nd half....I also liked his clutch freethrows to ice it.

02-14-2009, 09:08 PM
Has to be either Josh or Meech. I will say Meech because of his 1st half offense.

02-14-2009, 09:08 PM
I'll go with Meech for his career high in points and only one of the Zags' 16 turnovers in 25 minutes of action.

02-14-2009, 09:09 PM
Gotta go with Meech.
3 shots underneath. Took a charge. AND
2 three pointers!!! Yes, Meech can shoot! All this in one half, but game changers all.
Great job team.

Dior "Foghorn" Lowhorn was very good on the other side.

AD was a solid second.

My GUnit is Meech, who had his best half as a Zag in that 1st half.
(Too bad he sat the first 7 minutes of the 2nd half.)
Ira! did great with shooting, rebounds, a block, and hustle, so he gets the GUnit per minutes played.

02-14-2009, 09:11 PM
Austin had numbers in the end but Meech played an entire game.

Way to go MEECH!

Am I dreaming or do we have three more years of this guy! :)

I really like his fearlessness to take it to the hole. Also, he's smart with his passes and makes some pretty awesome ones into the paint. Our future looks bright at the point guard position. Meech is the G-Unit tonight in my mind!

Goodson, by far.

02-14-2009, 09:13 PM
I like the poll Reno! Easier for us all to keep track of.

02-14-2009, 09:21 PM
All Daye GUNIT

honorable mention Goodson

02-14-2009, 09:32 PM
I thought Micah played well: 8 pts, 3 boards, 2 Asst, 1 Steal. . .

but my vote in the poll went to Mr. Goodson. Very solid all-around game tonight. Look forward to watching him lace 'em up the rest of this year and in seasons to come.

Tip o' the Zag cap to USF for a great effort; they showed a lot of heart tonight in a difficult circumstance ( re: the short bench due to the disciplinary suspensions ) Of course, some Dons fans will look at the close margin and claim the win is "tainted" :p

Got to go with Meech, the Zags were scuffling in the first half until he came in and and put a little life into the lineup. It was great to see him hit those 3's especially with the Dons backing off of him and giving him wide open looks.

02-14-2009, 09:45 PM
Meech, just for taking and making the three-pointers. Career high and 1 TO for the future floor general.

02-14-2009, 09:51 PM
My vote goes to Meech. In 25 minutes, Goodson had 13 points, 2 assists, 1 steal and only 1 turnover.

When was the last time we saw this happen? In 36 minutes, Dior Lowhorn had 23 points, 4-4 from 3 point range and only 1 foul. In 35 minutes, Blake Wallace had 19 points, 5-6 from 3 point range and 0 fouls.

I vote for Meech. Great hustle. Didn't have the silly fouls, played composed, picked the right times to attack, and even hit a couple treys. Nice job freshman. Build on this!

Josh did a good job on the inside but was exposed a little on D by SF when taken out to the 3pt line. Still a good job hustling, but why can't we feed the big man? He was working hard against Lowhorn, trying to go right back at him, but we were too slow with our looks underneath. I know many posters on here question if we have a true post, but it looked like we had someone looking to post tonight and hardly anyone to give the man the rock. Yes, I know they were double-teaming but the ball rotation was slow.

02-14-2009, 10:31 PM
Meech, with credit to Josh for his continued steady scoring and leadership...

02-15-2009, 01:10 AM
What? its got to be daye.17 and 9 in only 28 minutes. meech was great the first half but that was it. and pargo was that bad? 12 points on 50% shooting, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. yes he had the 4 tos but so did alot of people. for all the complaints this team is looking to be undefeated in conference, and going into march with 23+wins. seems like a typical zag season, great!

02-15-2009, 06:56 AM
Goodson is mine!

Daye had a great 2nd half but made a lot of mistakes the 1st half

02-15-2009, 07:38 AM
I voted for Austin, he went 6-7 on free throws and the rest of the team was 3-7. Way to go Meech, looks like I should have voted for you, but I haven't seen the game yet. Usually I would wait to see the game before voting, but I haven't given Austin much love this year.

02-15-2009, 08:59 AM
Meech! Meech! Meech!

02-15-2009, 10:10 AM
best game as a Zag...changed the tempo when he played, and looked at the basket aggressively. Nice response from him since Memphis. Micah was part of that tempo change too, I thought. That whole second unit in the first half.

Good offensive performance overall by the team.

Next up LMU.

Meech. HM to Josh, who rebounded fairly well and could have had a monster game if he'd gotten more touches (perfect from the field - impressive) - though he did have trouble with the quicker Lowhorn on the perimiter - and also to Micah who definitely brought it, even at the beginning of the game when most of the rest of the starters were stinking up the joint and never let up the whole game.

02-15-2009, 01:55 PM
Meech kept us in the game. If it had not been for his energy & good ball handling skills - we would have been embarrassed by a 1-9 WCC team!

Even though he makes some of the usual freshman mistakes, I'm sorry to say I now cheer when Jeremy sits and Meech comes in because he just seems to want it more than Jeremy.

Anyway, Meech is WITHOUT DOUBT the GUnit of this game! :)

02-15-2009, 03:06 PM
Did not see the game, so just based on stats, Goodson. when I read the article and then the stats, what jumped out was Detmetri's 13 points and 2for 2 from 3 pt land. Huge boost from an unexpected source. I think he can build on this game the rest of the season.

02-15-2009, 03:12 PM
The blur.

I still think the GUnit is/was AD. Critical points at critical times. Same with defense, boards, and generally being the away from the ball spark when most needed.

But I'm glad Meech set the fire in the first half and won the votes, hearts and minds of Hudson/Fox and the GUB for that contest. He's growing into his role and looking better with each game.

Go Zags !
