That was what a "recruiting expert" at Dawgman said soon after it was revealed that Steven Gray had verbaled to Gonzaga after his sophomore year in high school. The same individual said that Gray wouldn't "cut it" in the Metro League.

I've been waiting 2 years to say this....Steven is the Seattle Times and NewsTribune Washington state male high school player of the year:

Also a nice article on incoming Zag Courtney Vandersloot, who is the Seattle Times female player of the year:

It's got to hurt to lose out on two big time prospects (one male, one female) in your own backyard.

Not too shabby.

Stephen is going to look great in a Zags jersey.

He'll be a great Zag. I think he'll be a guy that can shoot it from anywhere and still pull in 5 boards and 5 assists a game eventually.

I watched him play in the state championship and i've watched a few of his games on comcast and i'm a little skeptical. He is definitly not the shooter he's advertised as. He's good but i think he may be just a tad over rated. My guess is that he'll redshirt. Bring on Austin Daye. that guys a ballaholic

Just curious: if he is the state POY and a project, exactly what type of finished product should we be expecting? :D

I wouldn't put too much stock in the state title game performance. There are people on this board that have seen him play dozens of times in person who claim that that may have been the worst they've ever seen Steven play. The people that voted for him as POY have seen Gray play in many more games than just that one game.

Stuff happens........

BTW...I doubt that Steven or any of the newcomers redshirt.

I also distinctly remember a thread on Dawgman that was over 100 posts long, making fun of Steven and how he was so awful that Romar wouldn't recruit him in a million years. Keep bringing in Dentmons and Applebinos, I suppose. lol. I'm glad I'm not among idiots here.

What a great looking couple of Zag recruits! - I predict we are going to be very proud of them.

With Bob Bender bringing in Brandon Roy, Will Conroy, Mike Jensen and, with Nate Robinson going to UW for football before Romar arrived, Romar took those kids (Bender's kids) and did quite well with them.

Now, for the first year with his recruits only, they don't even make the NIT.

Hmmmmmm.

Same pattern at Pepperdine, btw.

CDC - thanks for the links on Gray and Vandersloot, personally I would like to see "projects" like Steven Gray commit to Gonzaga every year!

BTW - there are no recruiting experts at Dawgman.:lmao:

I think we should just give Gray the nickname The Project.

No one will know what we're talking about, which will make it that much better.

I'd comment on the Romar thing but I don't want to mess with my blood pressure.

Who recruited Brockman? I seem to remember dozens of posts here lauding that young man's heart. I think Lorenzo brought him in. And FWIW, I think John B is a warrior of the highest caliber. Can you imagine him as a Zag?

He's a stud. I, for one, would have loved to see him in a Bulldog Uni.

That said, he wasn't enough to overcome Romar's inability to put together a smart schedule or win on the road.

Will both Gray and Vandersloot be playing in the NW Shootout in Portland on April 1 at U of Portland Chiles Center? It showcases many of the top players from Washington and Oregon, both boys and girls represented. It was four years ago that I got to watch Raivio and Morrison play in person. What a treat!

Steven Gray wasnt getting recruited by Romar because he already committed to GU after sophomore year. Why would romar waste his time on a guy that had already committed to GU? With that being said i watched portions of about 5 games on cable and he looked good in all of them. I think he will end up being the two guard with Boulding running the point after Pargo is gone, but thats two years away. Next year he will be an athletic sharpshooter that can fill in at the shooting guard position.
