View Full Version : On a lighter note: who will you root for in the tournament?

03-16-2007, 01:10 PM
I am firmly on the Winthrop bandwagon, and have been for the past 2 or 3 seasons.

I will also root for the little guys that are left: teams like Virginia Commonwealth, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Niagara, New Mexico State, Jackson State, and Albany. We need some March Madness!

I will root for WSU because I like the Bennett coaching philosophy of tough defense, and because WSU is genuinely very good this year.

I can't root for Miami of Ohio because my parents went to Oregon, but otherwise I would.

Oh, and I will root for UCLA to beat Indiana. As much as I don't like rooting for UCLA, and even though I was a Hoosiers fan growing up due to Bobby Knight, I can't stand sanctimonious smug Kelvin Sampson. Therefore UCLA is the lesser of two evils.

So who are you rooting for now that the Zags' season is over?

Winthrop baby!! Come on, hold on....

03-16-2007, 01:42 PM
WSU for sure. Gotta root for the Cougs! Winthrop and VCU have styles of play that I just love. Durant the freshman sensation and Texas have the potential to go far any night that Durant puts up 30. Southern Ill. Another "mid-major" but thos time, they have a four seed. I'd like to see Indiana do well so GU will look a little less pathetic. Creighton the jesuit school. All the other underdogs. I love to see the bigs go down.

WSU, Winthrop, Creighton, Texas.

I'll be pulling for WSU, Winthrop, and Xavier.

03-16-2007, 03:05 PM
Winthrop, WSU, VCU

bracket wise, i have winthrop in the elite 8 so i probably want them to do the best....but i like all three teams

to root against the Huskies.

I'll be rooting for Wazzu and Oregon- a little west coast love (I cannot root for UCLA).

I would love to see Winthrop make a big run - appropriate that they want to be the Gonzaga of the east & get their first tourney win in Spokane. I'm generally an underdog fan, but I've always liked the Gators, starting back when they were Lon Kruger's team. Washington St. has been a great story this year - hard not to cheer for them. Probably Memphis too, since I'd like to see a good team do well even though they have inferior competition in conference, and then Southern Illinois. The Valley should have had at least one of the Big Ten's extra 2 picks.

Thank you again, Zags fans, SO much for your support of the Winthrop Eagles! What a GREAT day it is to be a part of the Winthrop family!

WSU, Winthrop, and the rest of the Pac-10 in that order.

03-16-2007, 10:56 PM
Yep, WSU first, Winthrop second. I guess I like Nevada and Butler as well, and will (usually) root for the other Pac-10 teams. I do have trouble rooting for Oregon - don't really like the Ducks. I'd go for them on occasion, but certainly not against Winthrop.

UCLA, UCLA, UCLA, UCLA, Winthrop, and UCLA.

I talked to Coach Marshall for a few minutes tonight. As much as I tried to discuss Winthrop and their recent success, he kept keying in on how great the atmosphere for hoops is here in Spokane and how he wished he had the hometown advantage and support that Gonzaga has. Very gracious and complimentary.

Winthrop (Go Eagles, take out the Ducks!!), WSU, and anyone that plays against UCLA (even Indiana, I guess, though it's distastful rooting for a Sampson team). Other than that, anyone I picked in my bracket.

Nobody - the season ends when GU stops playing

UCLA will blow out Indiana then get by Pitt. A UCLA/Butler match will be interesting and could be winable for Butler. I want to see that match up. I'd like to see UCLA play Memphis in the finals.

03-17-2007, 06:03 PM
Butler has to get by Florida first. That's a pretty tall order, even though I like Butler's squad quite a bit. They reminded me of the 98-99 Zags today.

03-18-2007, 10:43 AM
Oregon, of course, and then for Kansas-

03-18-2007, 11:46 AM
UNLV all the way

03-18-2007, 06:20 PM
Winthrop. But that ended today. :mecry:

Butler. A rooting interest since '02, when they were given arguably the worst-ever NCAA snub in history with a 25-5 and no at-large bid. Collegiate hoops can thank Butler for the "outgoing seniors rule" right after '02 and the later RPI weighting favoring road wins to help the smaller warriors forced to take to the road every early season.

Butler War Song

We'll sing the Butler war song,
We'll give a fighting cry;
We'll fight the Butler battle--
Bulldogs ever do or die.
And in the glow of the victory firelight,
Hist'ry cannot deny
To add a page or two
For Butler's fighting crew
Beneath the Hoosier sky.

Don't actually know the TUNE for that song. :D
Never actually been under a Hoosier sky either.
Minor details.

Georgetown ... forever. (Slogan of their annual fund drives.) All those NIT years with Esherick sure seemed like forever. :(

The Pac-10...it's in GU's interest that the Pac-10 is worthy of respect.

Go Ducks!!!
