Casey (Walla Walla, WA): How about them Zags Andy? If they come through this brutal non conference unscathed, they are the # 1 team in the land right? Also, are they the toughest team in the country to scheme defensively for? With 6+ guys who can drop 20 on someone on any given night.

Andy Katz: It all comes down to the boards. If they can keep teams to one shot a possession or two then they can hang with anyone. They will score with any team in the country. Josh Heytvelt also has to stay out of foul trouble.

Maryland just went from red to 50-50 things are looking up a little.

Now they are blue and NJ too! Blue states on the rise...

The "America's Team" thing has largely been a media creation lately. I think there's a lot of people out there that see us as an overrated team who can't play defense and can't compete in March. And there's still a bias against the size of the program, with people throwing "mid major" around these days like its a slur. But hey, the fact that they continue to talk and worry about us means we're anything but, and I'm cool with that :D

WCC's RPI ranking is much better than Pac-10 as of today. http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_conf_Men.html

Getting tired of hearing about the WCC being a lowly conference---these kinds of numbers show that is not the case.

How rare is that?

Nothing is rare when looking at the early season RPI numbers. The numbers shouldn't be used for anything serious until at least mid-Jan*.

*actually the RPI should be ignored all the time, but as long as the NCAA uses it to seed the tourney, it's not going away...

It's completely logical to make arguments against the Zags MAKING the Final Four, but to say they're not Final Four MATERIAL is kind of silly, ain't it?

We have to contend for a national championship this year. After seeing what we have done so far against non-conference opponents, we have to the entire WCC shaking in their boots. Nobody in the nation wants to play a team that can score so easily on even the tougher defenses.

GU beats WSU, UConn and Tenn (again) and the voters will change their tune. Performance changes minds. GU plays like it has in the last few games (the coming out), it doesn't matter what the voters think..we're a final four team.

I am 100% with Uber on that one. Red Sucks. Don't we always loose in red anyway?

Indiana has 300 voters with a very loud no vote. Wishful thinking?

Dicky V on Sportscenter just now didn't have the Zags in his top five teams, yet said on ESPN.com that we were one of the top two teams of the week and said during the broadcast that he had the Zags in his Final Four. What sense does that make?

Too many road trips? He did have us in the top six though - placing Oklahoma ahead of us.

I feel that the gonzaga mens basketball is lacking in a few aspects of the game. (THREE POINTERS). Well that could be worked on. Eary I would have to say that since they won the Old Spice clasic tourney, they could put it up in the final four. I really hope they do it this year.

You read different message boards and people are still stuck on the Zag's defense. They blindly throw the "defensive problems" around because the stereotype is a permanent fixture in cyberspace.

They don't bother to do the research. They simply do not know.

I have to laugh when the discussion is about the offensive firepower. It really isn't much different than Morrison, Ravio, Batista, and company. What is very different is the opponent's shooting percentage, turnover margin, and blocked shots.

People blog that that Zags can't play defense, but we are seeing something very different. We see Matt ripping the ball out of a wing's hands. We see Austin stealing an inbound pass and driving to a dunk. We see Josh rejecting a ball right back into the shooter's face. We are seeing Jeremy steal a pass and throwing the length of the court to a breaking wing. We see Micah denying passing lanes at the top of the key. We see Meech sprinting to a spot and setting his feet to take a charge.

We are seeing something very, very different from year's past. America (by way of media influence) simply hasn't embraced it yet. The numbers are not lying. (http://kenpom.com/rate.php)

And more detail here (http://kenpom.com/sr.php?team=Gonzaga&y=2009). The red areas are free throw shooting and offensive rebounding. Certainly not problems with the defensive side of the ball.

Whatever defensive concepts that Ray has been brought in to coach, it seems to be sinking in.

On another note, look at Utah on the link. Do we travel to their place?

Yes, I am seeing that out there still. Silly posters. It is not a bad thing to be underated though.

We don't have a Morrison or Batista...The difference is with Ravio and "company" is two other guys and the bench. Don't get me wrong about not loving any Zag...Pendo and Mallon could put up some points, but had trouble with the big boys and their outside shot was not a huge threat.

We did not have to be real creative to get to the basket with Ammo and JP and I just never saw any real effort because Ammo or JP was just gonna put it in, right? When it came to the dance it got tougher. I don't think Raivio was as good of a leader or was as tough as Pargo is. He could bring it in, but he did not have the weight.size behind him Pargo does and he did not look as scary on the floor to the opposing team.

With Pargo, MB or SG, MD or SG, AD, JH on the floor, who do you have time to double team? I am thinking later of Sacre is going to be a beast inside. JH can be a beast sometimes. AD can block. Sacre will be a real beast, I think along the lines of JP. The threat is more evenly spread out the entire game and I think that is lot better offense than have 1, 2 or 3 real offensive weapons that can foul out or need a little rest during the game.
