First step: UW Huskies visit Portland
Published: November 15th, 2008

The University of Washington men’s basketball team begins a journey tonight that it hopes will lead back to the NCAA tournament after a two-season absence.

Along the road they will meet defending national champion Kansas, play a rematch against Oklahoma State of the Big 12, get at least two chances to end their long losing streak to Washington State and ... and a lot of other things coach Lorenzo Romar isn’t interested in discussing.

“Doggone,” he said. “(Tonight) at Portland. You know the deal. Hey, really, not over-hyping it, not trying to bring any more of a billing than it should be, but that game is going to be a huge game for us. It’s the first time we started on the road since we’ve been here. ... It’s their opener, it’s on the road, and that is a game that we cannot possibly overlook. We’d better be ready because they’re going to be ready for us with knife and fork.”

The Pilots earned Romar’s respect last season when they led UW at halftime, 30-26, before the Huskies rallied for a down-to-the-wire victory, 67-63.

Portland’s leading scorer that night was Nik Raivio (23 points), and their leading rebounder was Luke Sikma (seven boards). Both are back, along with the other Portland starters from last season.Good luck Nik and and the rest of the Pilots! Make the rest of the WCC proud!

And regarding the Zags, there's this:
One team that remains off the schedule is Gonzaga. UW dropped the Bulldogs from the schedule last season, by joint decision of Romar and then-athletic-director Todd Turner.

New athletic director Scott Woodward – like Turner – likes the idea of resuming the series at some point, but he is leaving the ultimate decision to Romar.

“That’s between Coach Romar and (Gonzaga coach Mark Few),” Woodward said.

“I would love for it to happen. I think it’s a great competitive series. But it’s going to be to the benefit of the University of Washington, period.”

Romar already has said he expects to add a new series with Seattle University next season, as the Redhawks transition to full Division I status.

But for today, the only Northwest rival on his mind is the one whose campus overlooks a bend of the Willamette River.

Right, and getting their butts kicked by Gonzaga would not be to their benefit! lol.....

First off, would we want to put UW back on the schedule? And second, GO PILOTS!

11-15-2008, 06:00 PM
Preseason FF favorite and still "beneath" the Huskie's OOC schedule.

I'm over it, but that whole "only when its good for the U of W" BS still really gets me.

28-16 Portland with about 8 minutes left in the first half.

Hope I don't jinx anything.

11-15-2008, 07:38 PM
Nik is playing well and the huskies are committing more fouls than scoring points.

11-15-2008, 07:39 PM
Totally agree. Who needs UW, and go PILOTS!!!

11-15-2008, 07:53 PM
UW up by a point with a minute and a half to go int eh 1st half. Hope the Pilots can hang on and end the half with a lead.

"Free Range" Husky fans are all over Eastern Washington.
We need to resume this In State series so we can put them in their place. I am not over it. Those were great games. Go Zags.

In reference to the UConn Huskies: Finally a Husky team that is not afraid to play the Zags in Seattle.

11-15-2008, 08:29 PM
LETS go PILOTS, Ravio playing well.
I want to say, I think Issiah Thomas is a terrible point guard. I played with him pick up before the season started and was overwhelmingly unimpressed. Most good undersized guards have great attitudes and leadership qualities. Thomas takes bad shots and does not do a good job of help get his teammates involved in the best way possible.

On the other hand michael turner is real good

How about this final score:

Washington State 76
Mississippi Valley State 25

Yeah. Good for WSU, but Miss Valley St played Arizona St relatively well last night. I can't believe after a game that hard and a trip from Arizona today they were really ready for another game. Who schedules 2 games in 2 days in distant states?

A team that really needs the money.

2:00 minutes left. Pilots up by 4. 72-68.

UW's TV package sucks.

Good win!

11-15-2008, 09:17 PM
They did it. Portland beats UW. I suppose this is the last time they will play each other.:D

11-15-2008, 09:22 PM
Oh Johnny Boy, if only you hadn't been fooled by the false hopes of the purple and gold. You would have been a perfect fit in Few's program :(

Why do recruits keep falling for this program when they continually waste the state's top talent. Gaddy did you sign on the dotted line yet? It just doesn't make sense to me:lmao:

11-15-2008, 09:28 PM
As certain UW fans just found out, wins don't come free, on the road, within the WCC.

11-15-2008, 09:34 PM
I think I could hear Portland State's coach Bone licking his chops all the way in Spokane. Does anyone else feel like a coaching change at UW is gaining momentum? Wait until PSU pastes UW this season.

11-15-2008, 09:40 PM
Apparently the Portland game no longer "benefits" the University of Washington either....

11-15-2008, 09:51 PM
Is that you Lothar?
I hope so.

 for Portland!

11-15-2008, 10:37 PM
Mr. AD. Zags don't need the RPI hit.

11-15-2008, 10:52 PM
How can that much talent not beat everybody....oh yeah, Romar (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQENCnAhEXk).

11-16-2008, 12:29 AM

Great win tonight!

But UW is a football school.... :D

Congrats on the win!

Seattle-Times Story (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskies/2008396821_umen16.html)

Romar put the defeat squarely on the shoulders of every Husky with the exception of Brockman, who finished with 30 points on 11-for-17 shooting, one shy of his career best. He also had 14 rebounds in 33 minutes.

Romar was at a loss to explain why Brockman had just one shot attempt and was scoreless in the first 12 minutes while the Pilots streaked to a 28-16 lead.

"That was part of us not understanding," Romar said. "We tried to do it too much individually. When we started going to Jon, the game changed."

So ... his entire coaching strategy is "get the ball to Brockman?" Wow, sky's the limit this year!
