JP lands not far from the Loire area in France!

From LatinBasket.com (http://www.latinbasket.com/Brazil/basketball.asp?NewsID=139992):

Le Mans inks Brazilian big guy Joao Paulo Batista - Sep 4, 2008 (by Eurobasket News)
Le Mans inked another acquisition for the upcoming season. The team announced signing of Brazilian big guy J.P. Batista (206-F/C-81, college: Gonzaga), who arrives from Barons/LMT Riga. Actually he moved to Barons from Lietuvos Rytas in February this year. Barista had 9 games in Baltic league with Barons averaging 10 ppg and 4.8 rpg. Much better digits he recorded for 13 games in Latvian championship helping his team to grab the title. At the end of the season he was named 'Eurobasket.com All-Latvian League 2nd Team'. Barons also won FIBA EuroCup this year. Batista already has experience from Euroleagaue. He appeared 11 times in best European competition in 07/08 adding 3.4 ppg and 1.5 rpg. His first season with Lietuvos (06/07) was pretty successful. Batista's team won Baltic league and played in the final of ULEB Cup, what was enough for the Euroleague next season. He had around 10 ppg and 5 rpg in all competitions that season. At the end of it he was named 'Eurobasket All-Lithuanian LKL Forward of the Year -07'.

J.P. Batista graduated at Gonzaga University in 2006. At his senior season he averaged 19.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg leading Gonzaga to NCAA Sweet 16.

About Le Mans (http://france-for-visitors.com/loire/le-mans/the-city.html):
LE MANS is 80km [49 miles] northwest of tours in the dťpartement of Sarthe, some way from the Loire valley but included here as a good, relatively untouristy base between the latter and Normandy, with swift transport connections down to Angers and Tours. ..... The city is taken over by car fanatics in the middle of June for the famous 24-hour race, but for the rest of the year it's still lively enough, with one of the most beautiful old quarters of any city in France, overlooked by the remarkable cathedral. It was here, in 1129, that Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Maine and Anjou, married Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England, and where their son, the future Henry II, was born.

Love the Loire! Hope the basketball is as good to him as the nearby chateaux country is beautiful! Chenonceau:

Le Mans is a beautiful area from what I have heard. I have a friend at GU who is from there. If any one comes across any articles in French and wants them translated, let me know and I'll be happy to do it. I'm not sure how good their team is but hopefully its a good fit for JP and Simone.

would love to know more on this deal.

he must have been on one year contracts, which seems strange since wherever he goes, championships seem to follow.

I'm guessing this deal gives him better terms and conditions, but would like to know.

best,

Gonzagagurl, that's good to know about your translation skills. The official website for Le Mans (http://www.msb.fr/) is in French (it also is quite ugly, IMO ;) ). If you see anything there worthy of passing on to us, I'd appreciate it. (My sister is fluent in German, so I can get her to translate stuff about Derek and Sean or anyone playing in Germany. However, just between us kids here, she's not that fluent in sports jargon, so the translations are ... a bit strange. With your background, we wouldn't have that problem!)

Gamagin, I wondered about that too. I remember seeing the fans chanting his name when he was playing for that Lithuanian team, but as near as I was able to determine, he had some kind of an injury late in the season, and then Lithuania fired the coach and got a new one, and JP didn't fit in their plans and was cut, thereafter signing with the Latvian team. I've thought he played well everywhere he's been. Hard to get news, IMO.

I do wonder about the terms of the latest deal, with Le Mans, and how good a team they are. Hope they're great and that JP has a chance to make them even better.

Every thread about JP has to have at least one person say it: I love JP!

P.S. Everytime I post something about what JP's up to, somebody has to leap in and bemoan the absence of a similar presence in our post in recent years or to belittle our current squad. Drives me nuts, so I figure I'll just bean them to the punch: We miss your big, wide body and soft hands, JP! Send help!

Will he have to race 24 nonstop hours when he gets there? :)

I believe that what tipped the scales in deciding on Le Mans was that Le Mans has a Roller Derby team (http://www.24rollers.com/)!

Wow! This is fun! I found another story about JP (http://www.basketbrasil.com.br/internacional/jp-batista-assina-com-o-le-mans-e-vai-disputar-a-euroleague?show=slide&PHPSESSID=901787602a362ca6c262d197e3fb5152&PHPSESSID=901787602a362ca6c262d197e3fb5152) that also includes a lot of JP Videos! I just started exploring it, but have you seen the "Furious Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KcRWJu9_ec)" video on YouTube it links to?!!! I need to watch that one a couple of times more before I mark it for my YouTube favorites.

BTW, I opened the story with google translator and it made sense, so you can try this link if you want the translated version (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=pt&u=http://www.basketbrasil.com.br/internacional/jp-batista-assina-com-o-le-mans-e-vai-disputar-a-euroleague%3Fshow%3Dgallery%26PHPSESSID%3D90178760 2a362ca6c262d197e3fb5152%26PHPSESSID%3D901787602a3 62ca6c262d197e3fb5152&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=5&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3DBatista%2B%2B%2522Le%2BMans%2522%2BBr azil%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG%26as_qdr%3Dw).

Here's another story, but there's not much in it except this great pic of our guy:

It looks like they are delighted to have him. This interview is in french (http://www.lemans.maville.com/Basket-ball-Batista-A-l-ecoute-de-ce-qu-on-me-demande-/re/actudet/actu_spo-700172------_actu.html), but I used Google translator to convert it into english (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=htthttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemans.maville.com %2FBasket-ball-Batista-A-l-ecoute-de-ce-qu-on-me-demande-%2Fre%2Factudet%2Factu_spo-700172------_actu.html&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8). Maybe GonzagaGurl08 can compare the two and see if Google was close but no cigar, or not even close!

After 15 hours of travel between Recife and Sarthe, Joao Paulo Batista joined its partners manceaux yesterday in late afternoon to Antares. Entretien. Interview.

Brazil is the homeland of football. What led you to choose basketball?

I started to play in 10-11 years. It's my brother who showed me the way. He was already playing basketball.

Your path led you sports at the University of Gonzaga in the USA where you played with Ronny Turiaf. Which memories do you keep?

It was the happiest period of my life. I learned a lot. At the level of education, it was monstrous. You ressors being another basketball player. It is true that I played with Ronny. We still often talk on the phone, I am his biggest fan!

Can it be at Le Mans on September 17?

Ok, super ! Ok, super!

Your only regret is probably not have played in the NBA?

Not really, it's just my decision even if I did summer camps with Minnesota. I knew that the level basketball in Europe was very good and that I would have my place. In the NBA, it would have been more complicated.

You just spend two seasons in Vilnius and Riga, what made you come to Le Mans?

I love France. I wanted to discover. I have many friends in France. Juninho playing football in Lyon. Plays Le Mans in Euroleague, it has facilitated my decision. In addition, Hollis Price told me about a good club, the environment. In fact, I did not hesitate at all when I had the proposal.

Did you know you're the first Brazilian MSB?

No! I know that there have been compatriots in the football club. It's good to know!

What are your qualifications?

My first strength is my strength .... I am very physical! . I'm listening to what you ask me. I want first of all fulfill the role that the coach gives me, I am "coachable". That's what I learned in college.

Your weaknesses?

I do not jump over the bar like Alain Koffi.

Do you know your new partners?

Koffi against whom I played last year. Bluthenthal who played Maccabi. I heard about Spencer.

With Vilnius, you've atomized the MSB last January. Whether you have this meeting?

While the match to go, we had suffered in Le Mans, I was very surprised to see this team so low the return match.

A model for sports?

Michael Jordan basketball player like any self-respecting! Then Ronny Turiaf. And a nice pic with the story to boot:

Great find Zagnative -- and thank you for the translation -- Batista will always be one of my favorite Zags.

Good to hear he stays in touch with Ronny-- it would be great to see him and Ronny at the Toyota Classic next year (yes-- I am still hoping it keeps going-- it is a good event for a good cause).

One more article (http://www.ouest-france.fr/2008/09/05/sarthe/Batista-le-nouveau-poids-lourd-du-MSB--54384145.html) from ouest-france.fr.

Batista, the New Heavyweight of MSB - Sarthe
Friday September 5th 2008

ProA. MSB has a new post. His name is Joao Paulo Batista
(27 years old), from Brazil, 2,06 m tall and weight... 118 kg!
Measurements like... Teddy Riner (French Judo Heavyweight star). Without the kimono. With the basketball shoes. If one day, you shake the hand of Joao Paulo Batista (goes by J.P), the brand new Brazilian post of MSB, quickly recount your fingers, you never know. Because, between the fingers of this colossus of the hardwood (2,07m, 118kg), the orange ball becomes minuscule. JD Jackson wanted size and strength. He got them both. "He will bring some needed size in the paint".

Nicknamed "The Rock" by one of his college coaches, J.P. Batista quickly became one of Ronny Turiafís closest friends at Gonzaga University, where he collected an average of 12 points and 6 rebounds in his first season. It wasnít surprising that he was selected Newcomer of the Year in the West Coast Conference in 2004. Along side notably Adam Morrison (Charlotte Bobcats), he then finished the 2005-2006 NCAA season in even better fashion (19 pts, 9 rebounds, 59 % field goals percentage, 83 % from the line). More than a big strong ox! "This is not just a large building", JD Jackson said. "This is a skilled player blessed with a great understanding of the game. With his back to the basket, he can be a real asset to the team".

Finalist at the Uleb Cup

However, despite his promising numbers, the NBA never seemed to call. Too old already! In 2006, when he finally was eligible for the Draft, his resume already listed him at 25 years old. And despite playing in a summer league with the Minnesota Timberwolves, his adventure on the other side of the Atlantic ended without having ever really started.

In search of playing time, he quickly accepted the offer from Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius despite other offers from Germany, Spain and several Asian countries. Bingo, the first season, where he climbed into the final of the Lithuanian Cup and onto the Uleb Cup which they finally lost to Real Madrid. More than his 9 pts (80 % from the field) in 15 minutes in the final, the solid Brazilian turned in 10.4 pts (62.6 % from the field), 4.5 rebounds et 12.4 Overall (Statistic used frequently in Europe: Overall = ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((FG Attempts Ė FG Made) + (FT Attempts Ė FT Made) + TOs)). All in 18 minutes of playing time. His presence on the hardwood was seriously reduced last season. Especially in Euroleague, where ę J.P.B Ľís stats took a hard hit (3,4 pts, 1,5 rebounds, 2 overall in 7'57Ē and 11 games). "Batista was overall fairly frustrated last year. Initially injured, he was eclipsed slightly by Petravicius who literally exploded onto the scene last year. And even when Petravicius took his turn being out with injury, Batista didnít get the playing time and his confidence waned". Then suddenly, two coaching changes later, Batista left for the Barons of Riga, where he could console himself a little with the Latvian championship. Obviously, JP is bouncing with impatience with the idea of maneuvering again in the paint. "He is very excited about this new challenge. We hope to have him here very soon, this weekend or Monday. A player who, I hope, will be a good compliment to our other more athletic, finesse inside players". For a little lighter...

Google did a pretty good job. Just a few tense issues here and there. Azzagfan, what translator did you use? It is pretty dead on. I assume the interview was conducted in English then translated, unless JP speaks french. Due to his background with Portuguese, JP will be able to understand French pretty well as they are both romance languages. Let me know of any other articles that you need translated.

Wow, azzagfan! What a great article! And you sure got a better translation than I did when I used Google translator! Did you do it yourself?

I feel really good for JP going into this season. May he have all the success he deserves!
