Now that many of us (ok, you not me) are Titans of industry, it is fun to look back on the work study jobs many of us held while students at GU. What was your work study job, and was there anything especially interesting / funny about it?

For me, I sorted and delivered mail in the GU post office on the ground floor of the COG for 3 years. After the mail was sorted and distributed to the student boxes, I delivered mail to the AD building with my hand truck. I still recall the smile on Fr. Dussault's face when I brought him envelopes from Bing Crosby (full of money, I suppose).

PS - for those of you who are wondering why you never received the "porn" you ordered in the 72-75 period, I might know what happened to it. Tsk, tsk tsk.

Working on the GU Bulletin paid a small stipend, depending on the position; News Editor might have been $200 - 300. . .been so long I can't recall.

Editor-in-Chief, OTOH, was worth a semester's tuition. Since I was already covered in the tuition dept by another means, I was able to use those funds to pay for my room and board; as I recall, the room and board was less than the tuition so I was able to get the remaining credit balance in cash.

Not exactly "work study" but the effect was the same. The colleagues I had on the newspaper were bright, funny, great to work with, especially on "paste up" nights at the printers. Genuine characters. . .not exactly champions of the Fourth estate but we were well-intentioned if not well-experienced axe grinders.

The collaborative experience was a good foundation for other team projects later in my career.

Spent several semesters working the dish room at the COG. Nasty, wet and hot. The benefit was that we got to eat after we finished up work so I didn't have a meal plan.

Not work study, but work just the same. I was a lifeguard at the pool which was actually rather boring. Go out to the deck, put album on the record player (Mama's and Papa's was one I remember), open book and try to study, occasionally checking the few swimmers for a head count. The best duty was the faculty swim, usually just a couple people doing laps.
I also worked for SAGA, first as the Milkman, (I changed out the milk and OJ containers in the dispensing machine). About once a week I'd take out a milk and an OJ that wasn't quite empty and put them on the back loading dock for later retrieval to go over to Lincoln House and another students refrigerator.
Another semester, I worked first window at the COG. 1st window was the one where you placed your plates from dinner, it was also the sloppiest in the scuz room. It was actually kind of fun. Sometimes students would hand me their plates and I would replace them with something disgusting back on their tray. Giant crawdads from the biology lab was one I remember. I never had the huevos to place one of the cats on a tray.

Dish crew at Cataldo.

Worked a late shift one Saturday night after a wing from C-M had a screw-your-roommate dinner in the Cat.

Drank all the leftover rot-gut red wine. Remember Cella Lambrusco and "chill-a-Cella?" I wish I didn't.

After doing the dinner dishes, drained the the hot water from the Hobart conveyor dishwasher the refilled it with warm water.

Went back to Roncalli and procured bathing suits and ski goggles.

Rode the trays through the dishwasher.

If you want to replicate the experience, get rip-roarin' drunk, then ride in an open convertible through an automated car wash.

Sophomore year: Info desk at Crosby. It was pretty pointless, we couldn't do homework yet we could play cards or games. We got payed to play games, it was pretty good.

1st Semester Senior Year: Law School Telefund.

2nd Semester Senior Year: Paris Program Work Study.

*The last two were institutional work study positions, the first was Federal.

Frosh, Soph and part of Junior year... worked in the School of Education computer lab. Unlike those mainframe lab jockeys, we were expected to help and help a lot.

Worked in the communications department of the Gonzaga Student Body Association. Paid a pretty nice stipend for basically just hanging out with friends all day, punctuated by moments of "productivity."

I was a TA for physics labs my sophmore, junior, and senior years. It was pretty fun torturing, I mean helping the students do basic physics. I even enjoyed the grading, it was always good for a laugh or two.

TA for cell bio as well my junior year. I was "everyone's favorite TA," which was surprising, because I wasn't exactly as easy grader and my quizes could be pretty tough. It might have been that if you were late turning in your lab notebook on friday, you could drop it by my house, but you had to take a shot with me if you did. This was under the table, of course.

Cog for a year. Not work study. Beer money. I was the guy that put out the cake and fruit plates for dessert. I also had to re-fill the tea bags twice a night because the nuns would steal them all, put new bags of milk in the dispenser (there is something creepy about 5 gallons of milk in a plastic bag), and help the dish pigs (dishwashers) get trays organized. They used to surf on trays on the conveyor belt. Fun times.

Some guy in our dorm wing contracted hepatitis so we call had a meeting with everyone in the wing at the health center along with Balog (Dean of Students and enforcer). His face went completely white when the nurse asked if any of us worked in food service and, after I raised my hand and they asked me where, I said "The Cog". Balog looked like he was going to have a heart attack.

Also worked for Una the librarian in Florence. Really nice lady. Was able to catch up with her 15 years or so later when I went back.

I filled in at the COG in the dishroom. Pretty gross place to work.
Once when I filled in, there was a guy who would pick uneaten food off the trays. I told him that was gross. He said he could tell what food wasn't touched.
Today that guy is a lawyer in Spokane.

I did my time as a dish jockey in the COG. I did the big show - Sunday brunch. Twenty years later and I can still recall what I smelled like coming home from that shift.

I also was the beverage station person for Saturday breakfast. Saturday breakfast was only attended by the nuns. Given the normal Friday night activities and the state that it left me in, I probably made it in only about half of the time - I probably should have been fired, but my guess is, management knew that it was a tough shift to fill.

I also spent one summer working in the bookstore. I probably put a price tag on every book sold that fall. Another part of the job was driving a beat up Toyota truck around delivering office supplies to various departments. Moving pallets of goldenrod paper to the upper floors of the Admin building was a challenge with the antiquated elevators.

We still have those same elevators.

My first job was working for the Instructional Media Dept. taking tvs, vcrs, projectors to different classrooms. The nice thing was I got a key to the elevator in the ad building since at that time you could only use it with a key. Helped when I was late to class some mornings and didn't have to run up four flights of stairs.

Also worked for my adviser my sophomore year grading papers and answering phones. Not as fun as setting up tvs and vcrs but good experience.
