Yesterday's game story (http://www.fibaamericas.com/noticiasread4_us.asp?r=KCCGYGMOTZ&t=FPVIWCZCXY) from the FIBa Americas website:
FORMOSA (FIBA Americas U18 Championship) - Canada is still undefeated in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship after beating Uruguay 76-56 in day two of the tournament. The Canadians qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship and will look for first place in the group tomorrow against Argentina.
Uruguay won the first quarter 20-16 but their offense fell and at halftime Canada had a 41-28 advantage.
Robert Anthony Gagliardi led at halftime with 19 points. Gagliardi scored 11 points in a row to give them back the lead. Canada shot 14-32 from the field with six three pointers and 7-12 from the free throw line. They also dominated the boards 22-17.
The Uruguayans shot 9-33 from the field with three baskets from long range and 7-10 from the free throw line. Their best scorer was Matias Calfani with 10 points.
At the end of the third quarter Canada had a 62-42 lead and never looked back.
In the win Robert Gagliardi netted 33 points while Mangisto Arop scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Canadians game today will be at 21:00, which I translate to17:00 hours, or 5:00 PM Spokane (PDT) time. (http://www.fibaamericas.com/torneos_cal_us.asp?t=FPVIWCZCXY)
So far, Manny is #5 in scoring, with 15.5 ppg, and #2 in rebounding, with 12 per game average. (http://www.fibaamericas.com/torneos_lideres_us.asp?t=FPVIWCZCXY)
Manny gets some love from the Toronto Star (http://thestar.blogs.com/raptors/olympic_basketball/index.html):
Down in Argentina, the under-18 team is trying to qualify for next year’s world championships and there are a couple of kids you should keep your eye on.
Tristan Thompson had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Mangisto Arop had 17 and 12 on Monday when Canada beat Mexico 78-65 in its first game.
Had a chance to see Canada against some college kids in an exhibition game before the Canada-Lebanon tilt a couple of weeks ago at Ricoh and came away impressed with those two.
Canada gets Uruguay today and Argentina tomorrow. Four of the eight teams in the tournament qualify for the worlds next summer in New Zealand.
And besides the kids getting key international experience, head coach Greg Francis is building a resume that I imagine will some day land him the same gig with the senior national team.
Have been hearing for a couple of years how good a coach he is and watching him work his team that night at Ricoh, I saw why.
Just seems to have a calmness and a presence.
