If someone can do better than what I've shown below (using Google translator), feel free to clean it up. From 1asport.de (http://www.1asport.de/sport/Sportnachrichten/Derek_Raivio_wird_Point_Guard_bei_Trier_oy_84384N. html):

Derek Raivio is Point Guard at TBB Trier

After the conclusion of the contract with James Gillingham's your next road oriented personnel decision at basketball Bundesligist TBB Trier. Derek Raivio is the position of the point guards on the floor in the Moselle. Raivio last played in league-rival Köln99ers under coach Obradovic and moves now to TBB Trier.

Trier coach Defraigne: "Derek Raivio made me especially in the second half of the season impressed when he received more playing time. A Point Guard as it's something I've wanted for our team. Cologne was the first stop as a professional for the U.S. players who previously played the 24-year-old at the renowned Gonzaga College in the NCAA. They reached the 1.86 build large players last 18 points per game and led the Gonzaga Bulldogs to the title twice winning the West Coast Conference (WCC).

Trier BB Website (http://www.tbb-trier.de/staticsite/staticsite.php?menuid=60&topmenu=60). Looks like it's too early to see Derek on the roster.

And here's a photo of Derek in his Köln99ers uniform:

Boy, if someone is looking for a great road trip to see the young man play, the Mosel River area where Trier is located is wonderful! En route from Köln to Trier, you have to stop to see the most beautiful castle in Europe, Burg Eltz ...

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff232/ZagNative/Travel/Germany/Beilstein/BurgEltzapproach.jpg

It would be so neat the hear some stories from Sean and Derek about their experiences in Germany! I wish someone could figure out how to finagle an interview with them ... (The Kennel Report?)

P.S. I chuckled when I read this sentence in the google translation above,

"Derek Raivio made me especially in the second half of the season impressed when he received more playing time. ... "

It reminded me of this quote from Mark Twain,

Whenever the literary German dives into a sentence, that is the last you are going to see of him till he emerges on the other side of his Atlantic with his verb in his mouth.

I decided to try to choose my favorite pic of Derek as a Zag. I think it's this one, against UNC in Madison Square Garden ...

Like this one too from the win over Valparaiso during the first round of the NCAA tournament at Key Arena, March 18, 2004 ...

Lucky him, Trier is in beautiful country.

I just wish him the best. I have always thought he was among the top five PGs in Gonzaga History and that he gave up his best position (and the ball) for the team and never ever complained. Pendo got much credit for being the ultimate zag (and deserved it) but DR was just the best !!

Derek joins Canadian SG guard James Gillingham who played with Bradley and graduated in 2003. James has been at Trier since 2004 and will welcome a player of Derek's calibre, as the Trier team has been slowly dropping down the standings over the last few years.

I have been following James since he joined this team in 2004. Now I have an extra reason to look at the scoresheets!

I lived in the area many moons ago...absolutely loved it there. One of my favorite excursions on a weekend with decent weather was a trip down to Trier. Of course, I'd make a stop in Bernkastel-Kues or Beilstein for a quick snack.

It was so enjoyable to sit in an open air cafe near the Porta Nigra, and people watch while eating an ice cream cone.

I hope Derek takes the time to enjoy the area he'll be living in.

Burg Eltz is a must-see on anyone's list of places to visit.

Save up your money...the Passion Play will be performed again in Oberammergau in 2010.

Ozzag, I hope you'll share what you find here about that Trier team.

Message for Derek: On your Mosel wanderings, be sure to try the fixed price menu at Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein. Wonderful food for a modest price (or at least it was in 2004), on the patio overlooking the river .. Sigh ... The romantic setting is begging the D-Rav to sweet talk some lovely young thing across the table, and by sweet young thing, I don't mean Sean Mallon.

I don't think Derek needs to order from the fixed price menu. I'm sure he's making plenty of geld, and is being paid in Euros, to boot! ;)

ZN, you're causing me to daydream at work! I keep flashing back to those wonderful Sunday lunches at the Konigsbacher Brewery in Koblenz. Jagerschnitzel, bock bier, and a great view of the Rhine River. My route home would take me past the Lorelei and the beautiful town of Bacharach.

he was, no doubt about it. all you have to do is look at how many of the impt stat categories of all time he is in and it proves it.

Hello from Trier!

We are happy to have Derek with us and hopefully he will lead us into a brighter future :) The last two years sucked big time.
Be sure that we will do anything we can to make his life here as comfortable as possible. I hope he likes living in a small city with a great BBall tradition.

I will keep you updated on his performances at Trier. :)

As you note, many of us here have visited and loved that beautiful area of Germany. Are you native to Germany?

Steelman, thanks for that pic of D-Rav on the court. That's a dandy!

Yes, I`m native to Germany. I grew up in the Trier area. You are right that it is a very beautiful area, but some players seem to be bored by it, hate the little city. James Gillingham e.g. loves the calm, friendly atmosphere (he is the fan favourite, as he will play his fifth consecutive season for Trier - a rarity these days, as most players leave after one year), while others feel hemmed in.

Welcome, D-Rav in Trier! I hope Derek enjoys Trier as much as I did. Lovely town in a beautiful area in my favorite European country.

If D-Rav needs a change of scenery, isn't Baden Baden pretty close by? Looks like about 3 hours per viamichelin.com, and maybe he just needs a different view, like this one I was amused by when I visited there in '04:

D-Rav in Trier, any chance you could also keep an eye out for news of D-Rav's teammate from Gonzaga, Sean Mallon, who is playing for the Düsseldorf Magics (http://www.duesseldorfmagics.com/)? The language is a barrier for me.

Sure. If he stays in Germany. It`s unlikely that he will stay in Düsseldorf, as the team doesn`t exist anymore. But his agency www.court-side.com will tell us very soon where he will end up :) Maybe he will make it to our first division.

I was struck that a change of Cologne improved Derek's game.

Welcome back, Nazzir. This thread might get moved to the OldDogs (http://www.guboards.spokesmanreview.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=32) forum on guboards, where threads about former Zags are posted these days.

Good to see Derek is still nailing those threes. Also fun to see neighboring WSU's Taylor Rochestie is joining him in the three-point championship.

I'm glad to see he's shooting well from both local and remote distances. Anytime you can shoot 40%+ from the remote distance line that's encouraging.
