CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson was charged with driving after consuming alcohol following an early-morning traffic stop.

Lawson was stopped in downtown Chapel Hill because of the loud music coming from the car, Chapel Hill Police Capt. Jackie Carden said. The car smelled of alcohol and a field sobriety test led the officer to file charges, she said.

Because Lawson is not 21, he was charged with driving after consuming alcohol. He also was charged with violating the city's noise ordinance and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was taken into custody and released. Lawson is scheduled to appear in court July 8.

He was one of three North Carolina players who declared for the 2008 NBA draft. Lawson has not hired an agent, meaning he could return to school for his junior season.

Lawson attended the NBA predraft workouts last week in Florida with teammates Wayne Ellington and Danny Green. On Wednesday, he worked out for the Indiana Pacers.

Lawson helped the Tar Heels reach the Final Four, where they lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the semifinals.

Since one of the charges was also "driving with a suspended or revoked license" (the usual result of a DUI) - this is probably not the first time he has done this :(

Talk continues to circulate that the Denver Nuggets have promised to select Ty Lawson with the 20th pick later this month. Lawson pulled out of the NBA pre-draft camp after just one day, citing a hip-pointer, but was seen shooting around and looking absolutely fine just a few hours before he was supposed to play. He stated that if he were to be projected to be drafted outside the top-20, he will return to North Carolina, making the Nuggets precisely his cut-off point.

The Nuggets may not want to draft Lawson now. We'll see.

If getting caught with drugs or alcohol were a disqualifying factor for playing in the NBA, they would have to reduce the size of the league to 6 teams.

I think that is a sure-fire lock that the nuggets will pick him, you look at their roster lately?
