This is one of the more improbable stories at state this year. Spokane's North Central High School, which has an 8-17 record, is leading Hudson's Bay 16-14 midway through the second quarter. North Central was 4-16 (dead last, 11 out of 11) in the combined 4A/3A Greater Spokane League, the same league that has Ferris, which won the 4A boys title last week.

I'm not privy to Spokane HS ball anymore. How did NC qualify with that record?

There are 3 3A schools in the GSL now: NC, EV and Mt. Spokane (and they all had losing records in combined 3A/4A play). NC beat the other two in districts to get the number 1 seed into the regional with the 7(?) 3A teams from the Columbia Basin League (the 3 Kennewick schools, Hanford, Eastmont and a couple others). Anyway they won enough games at regionals to advance to state.

I think they are guaranteed at least 8th now. Is that a trophy?

To get any trophy (8th on up) you need to win 2 of your first 3 games.

That's right, 16 teams in Washington. In Oregon, only 8 make state.
