View Full Version : ESPN Recruit Tracker: Eric Hutchinson of Longview at the Rumble in the Bay

Anybody in SW Washington know anything about Eric Hutchinson? He's impressed some of the folks at ESPN Recruit Tracker (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=3415255&campaign=rsssrch&source=recruiting). From the story about the Rumble on the Bay:

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The 7th Annual Patrick Dennehy Memorial Rumble in the Bay didn't have an abundance of talent, but it's always a worthwhile stop on the recruiting circuit. This year's event, like many before it, served as a coming-out party for unknown commodities -- 6-foot-9 junior Eric Hutchinson (Kalama, Wash./ Mark Morris) comes immediately to mind --
Surprise Players....

Eric Hutchinson (6-9, 215)
Junior, Kalama, Wash./ Mark Morris
Hutchinson -- think Cal big man Taylor Harrison -- was one of the pleasant surprises at the event. He has all the intangibles to be a solid 4 or 5 at the mid-major level and may go higher depending on his development. He has a nice looking lanky frame that possesses the room to put on weight without losing any of his versatility. He has great hands, quick feet and can finish in transition. Although he has a slight frame, he battles hard at both ends and is one of the better passing big men in the West Coast's Class of 2009. He rebounds well, does an exceptional job of filling the lane and can finish with an acrobatic layup. His strength in the half-court set is coming off of screens and attacking the basket or catching in from the post, facing-up and utilizing his quickness to get by his opponent. Hutchinson can add to his game by utilizing the jump-stop and developing a midrange jump shot, but overall he is one of the top 10 post prospects on the West Coast.

ESPN's Eval Page for Hutchinson (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=59980&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb %2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d599 80): The Eval repeats what was in the Rumble in the Bay story above but is noteworthy for giving him a Scout, Inc., grade of 79.

Actually, Joel Francisco, the author of the Rumble in the Bay story mentioning Hutchinson (along with Tyler Honeycutt), had been surprised by Hutchinson earlier in the year. From a story dated March 14, 2008 (on ESPN Recruit Tracker) (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/columns/story?columnist=francisco_joel&id=3276287):

Francisco's Best of the West Coast from the 2007-08 season

Class of 2009 (juniors)

Top Sleepers
Eric Hutchinson (6-7, 215)
Longview, Wash./Mark Morris
He's an undersized five, but he's quite bouncy and possesses a solid all-around feel for the game.Hmm ... grew from 6-7 to 6-9 in two months? I like it! Just goes to show what plenty of sleep and eating right can do for a boy! :D

BTW, check out some of the other "Top Surprises" mentioned in that story from March ... Joe Burton, Aaron Dotson, Solomon Hill ...

Scout (http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=3767444)has a bare bones page up for him, but no info to speak of. I see nothing in Rivals.

So, what's up? How good is this guy and is he someone the staff should be looking at, if they're not already?

We watched Eric play in a few games this past winter. Hard to say what his D1 potential is. As far as GU goes, I am an advocate of GU acquiring a wide body post in the style of Karl Malone, and Eric is definitely not that player. More of a long and lean guy, and I think GU is already well stocked with those.

We saw him play 4 games at the Les Schwab Invitational in December. He shot pretty well, but was unimpressive as a rebounder or shot blocker and his overall defense was marginal. Here is a link to the Schwab tournament stats: http://www.primetimepdx.com/lsinv/lsi07tms/scores/leaders.htm

Thanks, 75Zag. I was hoping you'd seen him play and that you'd have some insights.

Here's MaxPreps Mark Morris HS team page (http://www.maxpreps.com/FanPages/Team.mxp/AreaID-32cfd20c-0dd8-400a-b86f-8c37b279a869/SchoolID-37dbb643-5251-485c-bbb4-fc10935ff5b2/Boys_Varsity_Basketball_Winter_07-08/Washington). It doesn't show team stats, except to show a 25-4 W/L record, 7-0 in league.
