I hope the jockey doesn't lose his head.

I always hate people that make true confession posts on the Internet as they tend to be idiots who do not comprehend the fact that anything they say is (a) boring, and (b) forever locked in cyberspace usable by law enforcement, future employers, potential spouses, etc. Having said that, and as I was preparing to place my bets for tomorrow's horse race, I could not help but notice the little girl with the cleft palate on the banner ad. I clicked through and it appears that for 250 dollars the charity can do surgery on a kid.

Thanks to the wonderful life changing experience and education I received at GU and the subsequent professional degree I received from the slimy cesspool of filth that is the U of W, I have reached the point in my life and career where I could (if it were legal) wager substantial sums of money on GU games, NFL games, horse races, etc. I could have won (if it were legal) very substantial sums of money over the past 30 years on my sports wagering activies.

But the picture of these little kids whose lives can be changed for a few hundred bucks is causing me to (temporarily I assume) re-evaluate my priorities. So I am putting all my Preakness money into the charity.

Call me a wimp, but if you can spare $20, please join me.

I sound like one of those Campus Ministry losers. God help me.

I sound like one of those Campus Ministry losers. God help me.You got it, baby. Thanks for the nudge to do something I should have done the first time I saw that banner. The banner wasn't there when Iwas ready to give after I read your thoughtful post, but I see now it's there again. Just in case it disappears again, it's here: Link (http://www.smiletrain.org/site/PageServer).

Again, thanks for the reminder of how much there is to be grateful for.

One of the horses that will take on Big Brown in the Belmont will be Casino Drive. Casino Drive won the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) in just his second career start. The son of Mineshaft is a half-brother to the last two winners of the Belmont Stakes: Jazil and Rags to Riches. All three are out of the grade I-winning mare Better Than Honour. A $950,000 sale yearling, Casino Drive was shipped to Japan where he broke his maiden.

Did anyone notice the jockeys' tribute to Eight Belles, the filly who was euthanized after finishing 2nd in the Derby? Super classy fellas!

BALTIMORE - Today’s jockeys riding at Pimlico are all wearing patches honoring Eight Belles, the Derby runner-up who sustained fatal leg fractures as she was being pulled up after the race.

The patches, worn today on jockeys’ boots and yesterday on their mud pants, have a red bell with the number 8 and the word Belles below it on a white background.

Terry Meyocks, national manager of the Jockeys’ Guild, said the National Thoroughbred Racing Association asked if the jockeys would wear the patches. Every jockey has agreed.

The patches are part of an ongoing collaboration between the NTRA, racetracks and the jockeys to work together to improve the environment for horses and horse people. Guild chairman John Velazquez said the patches are to honor a great filly.
