In Saturday's edition of the Louisville, KY Courier-Journal (not available online, as yet), coach Billy Gillispie confirmed what had been rumored for a month -- that Derrick Jasper would "li9kely" transfer to a west coast school. Jasper's local paper reports (in print, not online) that Gillespie said: "I would expect that he's going to transfer, but it hasn't been finalized."

This appeared on Kentucky's Rivals page:

"Barring any last minute reversals there will be a new No. 5 on Kentucky's roster next season. Derrick Jasper returned to his California home after Kentucky's finals ended last week and isn't expected to return to the Commonwealth to finish out his college basketball career. UK coach Billy Gillispie wouldn't completely rule out a change of heart by the Cats' projected starting point guard but conceded the possibility is remote."

Jasper was a prized (+/- top 50) and highly pursued combo guard coming out of Paso Robles, CA high school, and Gonzaga was in hot pursuit when Tubby Smith got him to commit to Kentucky. Jasper had knee surgery that ended his freshman year. As a sophomore he averaged 29.2 minutes per game, with 4.2 points, 42.6% FG, 43.2% 3PT, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.

We may or may not be in the market for Jasper's mix of position skills and remaining eligibility, but he is a talent, and he is coming home to the west coast.

In my best Artie Johnson Laugh-In German soldier imitation:

"Veerrrrrrrrrryyyyy interesting."

Jasper is, what, 6'5"ish? He could play in '09-10. Arop and Kong are similar, except Jasper is a point, Arop and Kong are not.

A change in scenery could only do him good. Career stats are pretty underwhelming. (ESPN player page (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=31682)) Injuries haven't helped.

And a career FT% under 50? For a PG? Oy.

I don't remember GU recruiting Jasper, though. UW did but I don't recall GU really being in the mix. Only two years of eligibility left. I kinda doubt that GU goes after this one. Jmo, tho.

Plus, the team is pretty full up on guards. And where would the scholarship come from? My guess is that he ends up somewhere in California, especially since he's from there. Perhaps one of our WCC brethren picks him up? I think USF and LMU (and maybe Pepp?) might still have rides available.
